The Search For Tetris

Well, we're set - packing's done, right down to the requisite knitting supplies for a 6-hour car trip.  I managed to jam enough sock-weight yarn into my bag to make 4 pairs of socks.  Which I can start on once I finish the one pair that I have been working on for the past 2 months or so...let's see, 2 months for one pair...and, um, 3 days for the next 4.  That makes sense, fellow knitters, right?  Isn't there a certain momentum built in if I immediately start a new pair?

But just in case my math is off, I also brought the yarn Susie wants a scarf made out of; oh, and then there are the 3 skeins of cotton that I am crocheting place mats from.

I hope I don't run out.

Larry and I hit 3 stores tonight, frantically searching for a handheld Tetris game for the car.  The one that saved our sanity on the trip last year is fading away, and we're scared to embark without this addictive marvel of electronic amusement.  We learned, to our dismay, that this item is the elusive holy grail of the toy kingdom.  We left Best Buy (our last stop) crestfallen and emptyhanded, but not before I noticed what looked like a Hello Kitty version of Tetris.  Eureka!

Alas, there was no such thing; what I had espied was simply a Hello Kitty shell for an Ipod Touch.

Did anyone catch that?  I'll repeat - a Hello Kitty shell for an IPod Touch.  Can someone please explain to me who is spending 200 dollars on expensive electronics for girls young enough to be into Hello Kitty?

Fare thee well, my imaginary friends!  Larry is waking me at 5 tomorrow morning, cruel man that he is.  But that's all right - I'll make him listen to Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers for the entire ride.  Listening well is the best revenge.

  1. Have fun! Isn't Larry Irish???? What is the matter with him? How can he not love Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers?

Do you mean to say your minivan doesn't have a DVD player? That thing has saved my sanity.
    Good luck!

  3. My 15 year old has a good friend who loves Hello Kitty. I understand that she is the only one in her school year, though.

I think Asian girls love that particular character. We get a lot of Japanese tourists around here, and many of the young women wear clothing and jewelry with Hello Kitty images.

  4. Have a safe and wonderful trip. To answer your question: our 21 year old is all about the Kitty. And yes, it is way embarrassing to hear her squeal anytime she sees anything Kitty but it does make shopping for her much easier!

  5. I worked with a woman once who was very into Hello Kitty. She would definitely have wanted that cover if she got an iPod.

    Have a good trip!

Drive safe! We JUST broke down and bought a portable DVD player for the Momvan--haven't used it yet, though.

  7. Sometimes I wish that there was a nice plexiglass wall between the front seat and the rest of the car.
We just got home from our family vacation. It took us 11 hours of driving (in one day) to get to our destination, with only a few potty stops and a brief lunch break. Good luck with your trip.
If you can't find the game, maybe you should just use duct tape.

  8. My 30-yr-old daughter loves all things Tinkerbell--so I'm guessing there are adults out there still into Hello Kitty. Sad, but true. Enjoy your trip. Hope you remembered the Valium.

  9. I hope you found a replacement for Tetris. I can understand how difficult it is to keep kids occupied during long trips. Just think about the fun that you will have once you get to your destination. Hope you have a blast!

  10. I thought it would warm the cockles of your heart to know that I asked my soon-to-be-9 niece what she wanted for her birthday. "Knitting supplies," was her reply.

Perhaps you had a seventh child and she somehow strayed to Alaska?

My sister unfortunately is one of those spending that kind of money on someone actually young enough (not someone who likes it way beyond the age they should) to like Hello Kitty. My niece got the IPod Touch for her 8th birthday because she like the games on my sister's Iphone. My children won't be getting anything like that at that age. On the other hand, I am naming that sister as the guardian in my will (should I pass away before my kids are grown).
