Early To Bed...

Time to catch up...

I haven't posted since Wednesday because I realized that I felt much better during our camping vacation when I was getting to sleep at a reasonable hour every evening.  So I've been trying to do the same here, but - as you can see - it has seriously affected my ability to blog.  Blog?  Sleep?  I don't know yet which one will win out.

It has been over 6 weeks since my ears were pierced, but I still haven't tried to change out the earrings because I'm scared to remove the ones I have in.  Anyone care to come over and help me out here?  I feel like an idiot.

I have way too much crap in my house.  TOO MUCH.  I almost felt better living in the pop-up, just because it wasn't cluttered.   I need to do something about this situation, I know.  I mean, aside from the solution I suggested to Larry last week - run away from home and live in the camper.

I must say, much as I dislike the whole concept of camping, I LOVE hanging out with other campers.  You get to compare camping set-ups and equipment, hear about other campgrounds they've visited, pick up good tips for where to go, etc.  Also? You hear normal families acting like...well...normal families.  We were next to a family with 5 kids (3 of them teens) that shared one tent.  I must say they behaved better than my kids would have in that situation; but I could still hear their mother saying things like, "NO FOOD IN THE TENT! NONE!" and hear the siblings bickering over sleeping bag placement.  And then there was the morning one of the girls poured too much milk into her dad's coffee, making it overflow onto his lap.  The whole campground got to hear a tirade delivered by a man clearly pushed to the edge by the camping lifestyle.  Or maybe it was just the camping-with-teens lifestyle.

Gosh, I wonder what they are blogging about us?

  1. You are ready for some fun earrings.
Get one of your kids to help you change them.
I am best left to camp at holiday inn...living in the woods for 37 years does not make me want go camp.
I am living with enough things that crawl.

  2. I love camping--but only for a couple of nights--three tops. I must have a real shower after that point. I grew up on ONLY camping vacations, so that may be part of that as well.

You've got to have your sleep at our age. I'm a stickler about my eight hors even though it means the rest of the family mocks me mercilessly because I head upstairs at 8:30--but there's the lengthy getting ready for bed process and then a little time to read or blog and before you know it, it's 9:45 lights out.

  3. When I tried to change my earrings the first time, they were still tender (and this was after the requisite 6 (8?) weeks. I couldn't get the new earrings in or the old ones back in. It HURT. So I quit. Because I can handle unmedicated childbirth, no problem, but ear pain? Forget about it.

    1. I know! I've cleaned up unspeakable amounts of vomit, but I get squeamish about removing these earrings? Makes no sense whatsoever...

  4. I saw my Aunt's house (she was a border) 3 days after 10+ people had been cleaning/organizing it and it was still a disaster. minimal paths to get through the piles of stuff. I can safely say we will never get that bad. I just have to clean/sort/throw out when hubby is not home. He starts to read all the papers I am trying to throw out and then wants to save them, as he might need them some day. If it is nothing to do with genealogy or finances, It can all go. I do not need 30+ year old college papers with good grades on them or printouts from Prodigy dated 1993.

    1. Yes, my most efficient decluttering occurs when Larry is away. My long-term goal is to move us both into a 2-bedroom condo before I kick the bucket, so our kids won't be faced with what you describe.

  5. I think it is cool that you got your ears pierced! I don't know where I was when this happened, but this is the first time I saw the post you linked to.

After all those years of cleaning up after your kids, you should have at least one who is willing and able to help you deal with the earrings.

  6. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one fantasizing about chucking in the lot and running away with a travel trailer equipped only for the bare necessities. Mine's an airstream, all silver smoothness.

  7. My husband just spent yesterday helping to clear out a room of clutter after his father passed away. He tells now he wants to make sure he doesn't leave that for someone else to deal with when he finally kicks the bucket :-)

Jen on the Edge gave me a great tip for earring changes when my daughter got her ears pierced. Spread some neosporin on the posts of the earrings you're changing into --they slip in really easily, and you're protecting against infection. It's worked wonders for those times she goes without earrings for too many days as well.

  8. It certainly would be interesting to find that the other family had a blogger too.

  9. There's nothing wrong with waiting longer for new earrings. There's a difference between 'healed enough to change them' and 'fully healed'.

  10. Cassi and Jen are exactly right about the Neopsporin.

Moms are the same all over, even --or perhaps especially when -- you take us camping.

If you named a few favorite colors, you could help me reduce a little bead clutter at my house. Really.

  11. You camp next to other people? We go far far away to get away from everyone haha. And heaven knows you can't talk to the other people, we're here to get AWAY (yes my husband comes for a line of grouchy people).

After our last camp trip which I TOTALLY enjoyed because my husband did ALL THE WORK (seriously who is that man and why did he not come home with us?) I've decided next time I'm going to encourage the oldest to bring her own car so that when she is tired of us she can leave and we can stay there drama free ;)

  12. Haha - that's great about the camping dad's tirade. Yeah, our neighbor campers over the years blogged plenty about our escapades I'm sure. My daughter screaming in the middle of the night because of a bloody nose, our dog getting sprayed by a skunk 5 minutes after we pulled into our campsite...at 10PM, my brother's err....stomach issues that caused the camp host to don a biohazard suit just to clean the outhouse. I shudder to think what they're saying about us.

But back to your post...I'm so with you on wanting to get rid of crap and downsize. I read a good piece of advice once - if it's not beautiful or useful, get rid of it. I need to chant that as I go through every room in my house.
