HELP!

David is turning 17 on Wednesday, and I have NO IDEA what to do for his birthday.  NONE.  He says he doesn't want anything.  I know - annoying.  I already gave him movie tickets for Christmas.  Should I do that again?  It's the only thing I can think of.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  GREATLY.

    1. I know, that's probably what we will end up doing. But, darn it, it seems so non-festive...

  2. For my 18th birthday, my mom got me a "Bucket of Soldiers" from Toy Story... I loved it. Legos are always awesome too.

  3. Laser tag? Camping gear? Geeky gadgets (my kid loves those)?
    Good luck.

  4. We end up giving a lot of cash, too. One thing that my 18-year old likes is Paintball so we'll get him a Groupon because it's against the law to pay full price.

A book in a genre he likes? I used to beg one of my sons not to buy the Brandon Sanderson novels as they came out so that I could give them to him for Christmas and birthdays.

  6. T-shirt from his favorite band, gift card for Subway (or whatever snacky stuff he likes), a new wallet (sounds goofy but my older boys always like this), itunes card (if he has an ipod)...and yes, cash is always good but I feel like it's so anti-climactic.

    1. See, my kids are so weird - I don't think David HAS a favorite band. But I do get the idea...

    2. Ha! My almost-17 year old likes skateboarding stuff. Does he skateboard? NOT SINCE HE WAS 12. But he'll wear the t-shirts and hoodies all the livelong day. I heart weird kids :)

  7. I didn't give my son anything at all for his 18th birthday or graduation! But I'd already let him buy a bunch of gear from REI, plus plane tickets to see his girlfriend, so we all agreed that was enough.

    1. Heidi, I feel better just reading this. We didn't give our son anything for graduation, either. Technically, we will get him a new computer before he goes off to college (that's been the graduation gift we gave each of his brothers) but it felt a little funny to give them anything at the time.

  8. Gift cards -- iTunes, Amazon, other places he likes.

Do you have a Sky Zone trampoline places around you? They are really cool.

17 of anything the birthday person likes. 17 of his favorite soda; 17 of a favorite snack or candy bar, etc. this idea has pulled me of quite a few scrapes.

  11. A book? Stuff Matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials that Shape Our Man-Made World by Mark Miodownik is quite cool- I'm enjoying it.

  12. I just asked my 21 year old (because for about 5 years I never know what to get him and struggle with this) and he said CASH. I also just handed him a twenty for something and he started singing (which he NEVER does ... "cash... I have cash... cash is great...!") so that proves he loves cash, and he said most boys 16-21 love cash.

  13. Ours was laptop for college--except Kinsey got lucky because we should have got hers for 17th, but didn't think about that, so she ended up with that for graduation and and 18th birthday present.
