Aiming Low

I just bought 5 pounds of 12-Flavor Albanese gummy bears from Amazon. Prime delivery. Christmas is weird. LIFE is weird. I mean, what sort of questionable life choices lead to bulk buying gummy bears?

Seriously, though? These are THE BEST.

In other news, tonight I finished knitting a pair of socks and they are awesome. I still have to get to the knitting store to buy some yarn to make hats for the people I actually live with, but at least now I don't have to waste time driving all over town to find those gummy bears for the Christmas stockings.

Took me forever to get this shot - you're welcome

Really, Christmas might go okay this year. I guess I should buy a turkey or something, though. Man does not live by wool and gummi bears alone.

Larry took 3 of the kids skiing today, as a Christmas treat. He would have taken all 4, but Rachel declared she had no interest in the sport anymore. "What fun is it if you're worried about dying the entire time?" she asked pragmatically.

Hard to argue with that.

So she babysat a neighbor's child and I went to a friend's house where we were having a knitting/spinning extravaganza, as one does. I brought cookies, because December.

Pecan shortbread - and yeah, I'm pretty impressed with the photo, also

David and Susie made these, so I can't take any credit. I might just eat nothing else for the next 4 days, they're so good. Butter and sugar being the primary ingredients here, I don't think I have to worry about not being able to pack on those holiday pounds.

Achievable goals, people - that's what it's all about.

  1. I love the cookie shapes even. Great cookie cutter. And the socks! I would not say no to a pair so cute. That would be a great gift to get. I never thought I would say that about socks!

  2. We NEED that recipe, please!
Fun fact: if you throw a red gummi bear at someone and it strikes the victim square on the forehead (preferable between the eyes, just above the eyebrow line) it will leave a lovely red mark. These are the sorts of things I learned in high school German class through simple observation.

    1. Yes, I never try to get them to match up, because that way lies madness. But wait until you see my next pair (almost done, just part of the legs to go) - they matched up exactly, without my even trying! The arrow that isn't aimed, and all that...

  5. Reminds me of the time my New Year's resolution was to curse more. No trouble at all keeping that one.

  6. OMG I love this post! I am jealous of the socks. Wondering if it is too late to learn to knit. Sitting and visiting with friends while you knit AND eat cookies sounds delightful! I prefer those cookies to gummy bears, personally, but sadly the cookie thing is not an option with celiac disease. Sigh. I just wrote about Amazon Prime - a beautiful but at times dangerous vice. And, I must admit I am with Rachel. The first time I ever skied was in the Alps during a college year abroad when all of the Notre Dame/Saint Mary's programs met up in Austria to celebrate Christmas together. I managed to miss the little occasional day ski trips my Dad took my siblings on in high school. I'm guessing I was babysitting. I essentially fell down an Alp that first attempt. Never again. My brother was there to witness my pathetic display. He was disgusted. He didn't recall that I missed each of the few and far between family ski opportunities. Bummer, because I consider myself more memorable than that. I recall being miffed, because it was super expensive to almost injure myself. My knees swelled up like grapefruit.

  7. Most people, when they think of gummy bears, think of those hard little German ones. These are ALBANESE 12-Flavor gummy bears, and they are incredibly addictive. I urge you to try some - gluten-free!

  10. But those SOCKS. They sure are beautiful. I stuck a ham in our crock pot this morning. Will pick at it all week and be thirsty all week to boot.

  11. SO many beautiful things in this post. Those gummy bears are pretty. The socks! O, the socks are gorgeous! I am in awe of people who can make such things with their own hands. Shortbread cookies are the most wonderful of treats. Your daughter's statement about skiing is The Truth.
