I can't believe you turned out ok!!! On the rat thing: I had rats under my front porch in my last house! One day I casually looked out my glass storm door and saw baby rats frolicking on the front stoop. Make sure everybody around you takes in their bird seed. That is what attracted them to our house. Our next door neighbor had all these bird feeders. And we had bird seed just stuck in our shed that they eventually found (after first discovering our neighbors bird seed).
