If Only Money Grew On Trees...

Yesterday, I started to tell Larry I was going to spend half an hour neatening our bedroom and ironing (in other words, keep the kids away!), but I only managed to get out the words, "I'd like to spend..." when he interrupted with a beleaguered "Money?"

Gee, financially stressed much, or what?

So I made it worse by going to IKEA today with a friend. Nothing like piling on, right? I snapped up a Tullsta armchair (without the slipcover) in the "as is" section for half price. It was meant for Anna's room; but as she's not in my good graces right now, I put it in my room instead. Will my love affair for the affordable Ektorp line never cease?

Hello, IKEA? Are you listening? Toss me some freebies, will ya? Thanks.

I recently instructed Theo to do schoolwork on the computer as much as possible whenever Larry is home, in an effort to make him aware of our need for another computer. Apparently my evil machinations worked. Larry spent all day yesterday researching different laptop options, which made me practically agog with anticipation. Oh, the future looked bright indeed!

Unfortunately, we came to our senses and decided to spend the money instead on a futon and frame for Theo's room (which doubles as the guest room), as my beloved sister-in-law informed me that she just may pay us a visit next month. Seeing as how the twin mattress currently on the floor might discourage Auntie Kate from ever returning, we felt we should cough up the dough for some decent sleeping accommodations for her. Especially since she is forgiving enough to return after the slashed suitcase incident from last time...

[Newbies, that last link is definitely worth clicking on.]

But I'm afraid I still need a few days to mourn the laptop I never got to know. It was so close...

  1. We wanted a laptop, too, but the money was going to go for a new mattress for our bed. Then we figured out that we couldn't afford that either. Sic transit gloria...

  2. I hope a laptop finds it way to you soon.

Maybe Anna could get a part time job and then buy you a laptop. Just a thought.

  3. With us I say, "So I was thinking.." and I'm interrupted with "How much will it cost?"

  4. You're right, the suitcase slashing link was worth clicking on! Wow!

I'll bow my head in a moment of silence for the laptop you never knew. . . It is quite a loss, when it was soooo close.

  5. Oh, I hope the laptop does materialize someday in the not too distant future. A moment of silence for the one that didn't materialize now...Alright, the slashed suitcase link was irresistible. I feel your pain. At one point, I had all knives, even butter knives and scissors locked up, and even then my son took an aluminum can lid out of the kitchen garbage can and slashed his sister's bike seat with it. There is NO WAY to childproof with some kids.

  6. Wow - never having had a child so destructive, I can only imagine. And reading about Anna's loathing makes me cringe - my 11year old son's behavior is chillingly similar. How many years of this am I in for? At what point do you haul a depressed pre-teen in for psychiatric evaluation? How about if I just commit myself for the duration of this phase instead?

  7. I'm sad for you about the laptop. Mine is my favorite thing ever.

  8. Oh - and I Heart IKEA. So much so that I am not allowed to go there more than twice a year. Seriously, it's dangerous. Hmmm, I think my six months are almost up! :D

    Someday your laptop will come.

  10. The interrupting one's sentence halfway through with a uneducated guess on one's intended end of the sentence sounds quite familiar!

  11. I'm not big on the crap that IKEA sells but I have a couple of Aerobeds that I sleep on when I surrender my bed to guests and they are pretty damn comfortable.

    Cheers!

  12. My husband received our current laptop as a "gift" from his boss last Christmas. He now does an average of 2-3 hours of work on it at home every night. Be careful what you wish for. ;) Our first laptop, which is like a brick it weighs so much, I bought when I was pregnant with our first, so I could continue to work from home in whatever room the baby was in, so that was for work, too.

Off to check the suitcase link. Will it make me feel better about my own kids?

  13. Oh dang. I have to laugh because I've conceived similar ways to force Mr. D's hand on spending money here at home.

  14. You are an evil and devious woman! Love it.

We're all sharing my laptop right now because the desktop crapped out several months ago and we couldn't afford the parts. Then one of the workers at the cigar shop Brad frequents told him he could fix it, so Brad brought him our tower. And we haven't seen it or him since. Big surprise.

  15. Good thing you didn't know about the Nebraska law back then or Rachel would have been toast!

Also, I'm feeling a little nervous that the only "sane" children in your family seem to be the girls under 4 and the boys. What will my 4yo daughter become?

Maybe we should move to Nebraska.

  16. I've got a free laptop moving down the pike towards me. It started with very techie friends. Went to their four year old. Then to my sister. She's getting a new one. And I have a very good friend who will make it zing for me. Yay!

And now I pause to mourn with you in your loss..........................................Do you feel better yet? Go to IKEA again. It will bring the peace you seek.

  17. You have only 1 computer? How do you survive? At last count, we had 6, though the 8+ yr old windows 98 machine crashed this am, as I was trying to save the data to my new pc.

We have only bought 3 of them new-the windows 98, the windows 200 server and my new (last week) vista machine. The xp my oldest daughter has was from a friend. He tried to update the bios and the pc would not boot after that. He gave it to me for parts- I was able to undo the update, add a heatsink/fan for the cpu, a new hard drive and dvd player. It works fine now. My second daughter has an windows 2000 pro machine from the same friend. Hubby had the cd I needed to fix the boot files, so M has her own pc. Hubby's latest server Windows 2003) was a gift from a co-worker, who built it for fun and experience. :) Hubby is a pc geek and has taught me all I never wanted to know about pc repair. It helps at my job. I should be able to take the A+ course in a few months and pass the licensing test. More money-bonus- and a pay raise are a good incentive to learn/study.

  18. IKEA? How bout opening a store closer to me than Orlando, Atlanta, Sunrise, Woodbridge, VA, or West Chester, OH.
Computers? I'd love a laptop so I can go hide in the quiet of my room while resting comfortably on my laurals...but that isn't gonna happen either :(
