It is once again that time of year when legions of people across the US are frantically Googling "tornado costume." And they all end up here. You're welcome. I have instructed our children not to involve their father in their costume plans this Halloween. It gets too frightening (and expensive).
Besides, Larry won't be here much this month. I think he'll be dropping in for his birthday this Friday and maybe he'll stick around over the weekend to do some laundry, and then he heads off on yet another trip. Somewhere. But I don't care. I travel places, too. Just today I went to Target. Tomorrow, who knows? I never make plans that far ahead. I go where the wind takes me: grocery store, Trader Joe's, Kohl's...each day is a new adventure.
Susie is insisting on being a pumpkin again for Halloween. We all want her to be a puppy dog, because every kid from Anna on down has worn the puppy dog costume when they were 3 years old (and, hey, I paid all of 3 dollars for it at the local thrift store 12 years ago); but she seems to be intent on breaking with tradition. The kid's a maverick, I tell you.
Sorry, couldn't help it.
I wonder if I could get through the next 29 days without mentioning politics at all? Wouldn't that be refreshing, if election-weary people could come to this blog and count on not hearing anything at all about the Dems or the GOP, no partisan bickering, no hockey mom jokes (like this one)? Just a place where we could all come together as people needing a break from all the name-calling?
We could talk about something innocuous instead. Like, candy, maybe...Yeah, that's it. How about everyone tells me what his/her favorite Halloween candy is. You know, the stuff you grab out of your kids' bags and hide for yourself? We can't fight over candy, can we? I mean, unless you are one of those incompetent lying terrorist-sympathizers who claim to like Butterfingers...
Wow. We share the same exotic travel schedule...Target, tomorrow, say about 9?
ReplyDeleteMmmmm. Candy. How about those dark chocolate bars that are always left over cuz the kids won't eat them. I will.
Hershey's miniatures? We need specifics here.
ReplyDeleteI steal all the Kit-Kat's and the Twix. I'm not big on chocolate but these two are my favorite. I'll stash them away and have them for several months to come. (unless my husband finds them)
ReplyDeleteI love those also! But they never last for months (and I can't blame my husband).
ReplyDeleteSave the Twix for me! :)
ReplyDeleteTarjay is one of my favorite places...love the clearance deals! :)
Reeses peanut butter cups and milky ways. They are mine....all mine....
ReplyDeleteHave you entered to win Petunia Pig?
Actually, yes, I have.
ReplyDeleteI like the 100 Grand bars. Trick or treat begins the gluttony holidays for me. I must resist!
ReplyDeleteA tornado, hm? Impressive. We had someone become a laundry basket one year. It was too heavy. I like thrift store costumes. We've already scored a care-bear outfit for the baby and a bridal gown for the 11 year old. Only four more to go!
LOL. I love it. My 5 year old actually does not like candy. It's a win-win. She gets to trick or treat, we get the candy.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your trip to Target!
ReplyDeleteEarlier today, I was talking to a friend who just took her daughter for a weekend trip to San Francisco. She said how much fun it was to go shopping with just the two of them.
I told her that last Saturday, I took my daughter to Wal Mart.
Thank you so much for mentioning the tornado costume! We've been trying to come up with a good costume for my son, and this would be perfect, due to the path of destruction that he leaves behind him.
Halloween is all about the Three Musketeers and Reese's peanut butter cups.
I like chocolate-any kind. Though most say they may contain peanuts. I'm allergic. I keep the epi pen handy and eat ones that have not bothered me before.
ReplyDeleteMini snickers and Nestle Crunch, peanut butter cups...
ReplyDeleteI love anything Chocolate and everything Sugar
ReplyDeleteSo....
This Halloween we are handing out non-candy items (Gasp - Yes - None) so I don't gain a ton of weight. I've no self control around the stuff.
New discovery this Halloween - apple flavored candy corn. They look pretty in the mix with "traditional" candy corn but taste pretty nasty. I only get about 3 kids for Halloween so I will be sure to over buy again this year in order to gain the customary couple of pounds to help me get through the winter.
ReplyDeleteOK, so Susie is a maverick. But is she an outsider?
ReplyDeleteTwix but there's never enough of them.
ReplyDeletehow can you not mention politics.....i love american politics...it's like watching a soap opera!!!! mind you...Sarah Palin is starting to irritate me...all that winking and "you betcha!'in that debate........yuck........
ReplyDeleteMmmm. we don't trick-or-treat.. We take the kids to Chuck E. Cheese. BUT, I always buy too many of the bags of Halloween candies during this wonderful sugar holiday season. Kit Kats and Twix have been bought, always corn candy.. the traditional as well as the "Indian Corn" type and the candy apple corn. The key to the candy apple corn is either don't eat too many (they're pretty flavorful) or mix them with the traditional kind.
ReplyDeleteAnd then begins the entire holiday season eating tooo much candy, well, just eating too much...until after New Year's. Then it's a desperate attempt to get off my sugar...and food...addictions! Until Valentine's Day...and Easter!!! Argh!
My kids would bite my hand off if I tried to take a piece of chocolate (I have trained them well). I usually end up swiping the smarties. I don't eat smarties all year, but in October I thirst for them. I used to take dumb-dumbs as well, but one year I popped one in my mouth expecting butterscotch and got buttered popcorn instead.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of pinko-sicko makes a buttered popcorn flavored sucker?
Whoppers! Do they still have those?
ReplyDeleteKids in Germany get a lot less stuff, since trick-or-treating is only just starting to take hold here. So if I pilfer something from the kids' bags, they'll definitely notice.
Also, Butterfingers are evil. How, how, how are we supposed to associate that shiny nuclear orange grit with peanut butter? I mean really.
OMG people! I LOVE Butterfingers! Especially the little round ones they shape like Junior Mints. I definitely steal them, orange day-glo color and all.
ReplyDeleteI eat almost anything chocolate but will not eat a Mounds or Almond Joy. Ugh. Flaked coconut is really horrid.
Hey, I love Butterfingers. And if that makes me a terrorist, so be it. But really special dark chocolate is my very best friend.
ReplyDeleteChocolate gives me migraines so every year I get a Halloween induced migraine headache because even though I know I'll feel like death warmed over at some point, I still have no will power to NOT snitch the little 3 Musketeer or Snickers bars from my kids' candy bags.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo pathetic.
Faith
Banana Laffy Taffy. Mmmmmmmm. Haven't heard of the candy apple corn. I'll have to check into that one on my next whirlwind excursion to Target.
ReplyDeleteoh.....I was going to say Butterfingers.....can I change that answer to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups??
ReplyDeleteMilky Way.
ReplyDeleteI've been feeling as you do, lately. I hate to bore my readers with more political ranting so I'm consciously trying to ease up.
Tornado costume? You MUST post photos. Really.
Smarties. Until I get a massive sugar headache.
ReplyDeleteButterfingers
ReplyDeleteI'm a maverick that way.
Candy? Innocuous? Do you not remember your chocolate post?!
ReplyDeleteThree Musketeers and Milky Ways ARE MINE!!!
ReplyDeleteNO one, I tell you NO ONE touches them!
At least they had better not...at least those that I can abscond with before the kids notice. ;)
Shhh...It's the Mary Jane lovers that I don't trust...
I steal anything chocolate... I'm still trying to convince them that they really do like Laffy Taffy best!
ReplyDeleteI have to cop to loving Butterfingers, as well as Almond Joys, Snickers, and those taffy apple suckers...mmmm...candy...
ReplyDeleteOooooh, I hate Butterfingers, too! Also? Whoppers. But anything else - and I mean ANYTHING, really, goes. Even that cotton candy they sell in a tub. No, no wait. Even that cotton candy they sell in those foil bags.
ReplyDeleteWe give out full sized candy bars. The neighborhood we live in is an older part of town. Most of the houses have at least 1/4 acre, some have 1/2 an acre or more. We get around 20 more or less trick or treaters. The case of 30 candybars from costco is plenty. I only buy what we like. There are no leftovers.
ReplyDeleteMiniature peanut butter cups, no contest.
ReplyDeleteOooh... good subject! ;-) It's a tie between almond joys and reese's peanut butter cups. My kids don't stand a chance of keepinf many of those around. I could care less about all those nasty ones that don't involve chocolate.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever played the baby shower game where you try to guess the candy that's melted into the diaper? I'm ashamed to say I've won that 10 out of 10 times.
I think it would be quicker if I told you what candy I DON'T LIKE.
ReplyDeleteSix kids?!!! OMG - I have ONE and there are times, I literally think 'I can't take the pressure anymore" (hear crying) and you have six. Am I a wuss or what? LOL
I just threatened my offspring with two full days of presidential politics PLUS the last debate if they didn't clean up their room by the end of the day. There is much weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth...and, oddly enough, some genuine effort being made. See, politics can be good for something [evil grin].
ReplyDeleteI do like Butterfingers, but honestly, give me the Heath bars or Skor or Twix on a bad day. Or a good day. Or pretty much any day that ends in a Y ;).
I cannot wait for this election to be over so I can stop obsessing about politics. My friends, I have a problem.
ReplyDeleteAnother problem I have: my undying love for all things gummy. Gummy worms, gummy bears, gummy sharks, gummy O's, Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, Sour Patch Watermelons, shall I go on?
This election is making me grayer!
ReplyDeleteMy fav candy is the Dark milky way's
