Life SHOULD Be A Beach

I'm trying to adjust to school and fall and schedules - I really am. But then I threw the whole thing in the air by going to the shore for a weekend with 3 other knitters, one of whom married well, apparently, because her in-laws own a beach house that they share generously. So we did that and had a great weekend and now I am back at square one re that whole adjusting-to-fall thing.

When I got back home, I told Larry that we need a beach house. I suggested that he retire right away and we could sell our current abode and buy a house on Long Beach Island, and he mumbled something about money and kids and food and blah, blah, blah. Let me tell you, that man is NOT a visionary.

So now I am focusing on FINALLY getting 2 of our bathrooms redone (one of which hasn't been touched since 1969). That way, I am ready to sell this house once Larry sees the error of his ways.

Living within your means is vastly overrated.

My picture of hell
The problem with redoing bathrooms is that I have to set up appointments with contractors, which means I have to know when I will actually be home, which is really difficult since my entire job description at this point is driving my kids places. And then, once we do hire a contractor, I'm going to be forced to make decisions: what vanity, what toilet (although, really, I'm pretty well-versed on that subject), and what tile. People, this is really hard for me. I mean, I'm supposed to decide which tile I want to look at in my bathroom for the next 30 years (unless Larry comes to his senses), when I am already tired of the nail polish I picked out two weeks ago for my pedicure.

It's stressful. I know it is a first-world kind of stress, but still...this is why we haven't done any of this sort of thing yet, even though we have been living here almost 10 years. Get this: in a house with 3 1/2 baths, we are all taking turns in one shower in the morning, because the other 2 showers are out of commission. As you can imagine, this scenario does not always play out well. Actually, it NEVER plays out well.

You know, beach houses come with outdoor showers. And you don't even have to tile those.

  1. Come over and see my new bathrooms. We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!

  2. Beach houses are nice to visit, but you might not to live there. I say this as I watch friends still trying to redo their flooded home post Hermine (in Florida).

  3. I hear you loud and clear on picking all that stuff for bathrooms. It's mind-numbingly boring, the things all start to look the same after a while, but you know you're going to have to live with the choices for years to come. And it seems first-worldish to complain about when, actually, it means I have indoor plumbing. I would like to say indoor plumbing is over-rated, but it isn't. Beach houses, on the other hand....

  4. "...he mumbled something about money and kids and food and blah, blah, blah. Let me tell you, that man is NOT a visionary." This literally made me laugh out loud! And yeah, my husband is not a visionary either *sigh* so it looks like I'm the same boat (pun intended) as you - landlocked.

As for the bathrooms - on the big stuff that's not easily replaceable (tile, I'm looking at you) go with a neutral - everything else isn't such a big deal if you don't like it (paint).

  5. Someone mentioned the word "retirement" and...ohhhhh...how my husband and I laughed...and laughed...*snort*...inability to pick out paint colors together are grounds for divorce around here, good luck!

  6. This is why we have been in our house for over 5 years and STILL have not painted the living room. It has nail holes from previous residents and, more to the point, it also has a more-than-five-year-old "new" thermostat that is much smaller than the old one, so I can see TWO different paint colors in that spot. And yet we cannot bring ourselves to make the decision and actually paint the living room. (Forget the rest of the house!)
Cracking up over Larry's lack of visionary thinking. I have this problem with my husband, although my current wish is for a lake cabin and a travel trailer.

  7. We are currently in the midst of having our kitchen remodeled. And yes, while a first world problem, the choices a paralyzing. I went to Lowes Home Improvement to check out cabinet knobs and pulls only to find they had about 5 to choose from. My designer sent me to a different place that literally had 100s if not 1000s to choose from and when I couldn't decide which ones to go with, I came home and poured over the internet for days. And this was for knobs and pulls! You can imagine the time I spent debating the appliances. And I still have a feeling there will be regret....

  8. Darn that Larry and his stinking practicality. I'd retire to the beach any day.
Good luck on the bathroom renovations. That sounds like the antithesis of fun to me.
