In honor of tax day, this woman's post says it all. Who knew that "American Pie" was really a meditation on the eternal conflict between individual freedoms and collective responsibility? Not me, that's for sure...
Good Lord, that's a great song. But the audience wins the prize for most apathetic listeners ever. And poor Don McLean is practically begging them to sing along...
I thought it was about that plane crash that killed 3 musicians back in the day-Buddy Holly and the others. I forget their names.
ReplyDeleteI have been begging for higher taxes or a couple of years now--but I never thought of offering to drive my Chevy to the levy. That is sheer genius.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Cheri...thanks! Murr is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI never knew anyone who couldn't sing along to this song--especially after having a beer or three. Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, BTW, Lindsay.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sending us over to Murr's place.
ReplyDeleteI owned a Chevy once. It really wasn't levy-worthy (unless I was to bury it there). Maybe if it had been a pickup truck? Nah.
I have to tell the truth. I once got a ride home from Massachusetts to Virginia with a guy who played American Pie and sang along the whole freakin' way. I was ready to retroactively insert Don Maclean into the plane that took down The Big Bopper. I'm almost over it now (forty years later).
ReplyDeleteI love this song, but I only sing it out loud when I've been drinking because that's really the only time that my voice sounds any good.
ReplyDeleteHe's no Madonna
ReplyDeleteOk - I must put in a word for the folks listening to Don McLean in that video clip. It looks as if the gig was filmed at a german TV station - that logo in the upper left corner indicates that. We germans only sing along in public if larger quantities of beer are involved. So - do you see any mugs of beer, lederhosen or dirndl in the video? No beer - no song!
