You'll have to excuse me today - due to an unfortunate confluence of events, I was required to sit through 5 youth orchestra concerts and 5 youth band concerts over a span of 6 hours. Despite my intense physical training efforts of this past month, this trial nearly broke me. By the time I got home at 4:30, all I could do was lie on the couch with a pillow pressed over my head to drown out the entreaties of young children who still wanted to go to the pool after this ordeal.
True, it was 98 degrees out. But my answer was still no. There is only so much one woman can take in a single day.

Heh. At least you sat through the final results. I get to coach string camp next week, and try to mold everyone into something that sounds like a coherent group. By the evening I just want to curl up in a quiet room. (Don't blame you at all for skipping the pool.)
ReplyDeleteOver the past month, I have often been in awe at the thought of the fortitude of those teachers who took my daughter from being a complete novice to being someone who can scrape out some recognizable tunes on her violin. It's nothing short of amazing!
DeleteMy attention span limit for piano only concerts is 2 hours. This has been tested on several occasions, and is the closest I come to a hard and fast rule. Luckily, the performers for the last piano recital agreed in advance to abide by it.
ReplyDeleteI failed to do the math ahead of time for this event, or I would have concocted an escape plan.
Deleteyes, that's right. stand firm.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteAnd ugh, the heat! The humidity! I run first thing in the morning and it's awful by 6 am. We finally got an AC for the living room/dining room/kitchen area--it was 88 in there yesterday (and I cooked anyway!). I may have my capacity for rational thought back soon.
Your poor lumbar! Your poor eardrums! You cannot go into that kind of rigorous exercise without proper training and preparation!
ReplyDeleteOh, my. Yeah, 2 hours is about all I could do, too. I can't even do longer plane rides, and I get to talk through those and can get up and walk around if I must (I'm an aisle sitter). Is your brain still mush today?
ReplyDeleteYou know, I don't think I'll ever be the same.
DeleteOMG. I can't even do the math. My son quit orchestra last year and it broke my heart, I loved those concerts. However, he did take up choir so I get those now. But never 10 of them in 6 hours. I bow before you.
ReplyDeleteYou deserve a medal. Especially since I bet most of them were children in the early stages of learning to play.
ReplyDeleteMy kid's school has a band with like 5 kids. Nothing good is going to come out of that.
