News You Can Use

On the parenting front:

You heard it here first, folks, teens are stressful...according to one study quoted by NPR, "...about one-third (34 percent) of those who live with one or more teenagers said they'd had a great deal of stress in the past month."  To which I say, "Yup."

The health beat:

We've already discussed this particularly lovely bug that bites your face and deposits its eggs in your skin, right? You know, the eggs that end up making your heart or intestines explode?  Well, this bug's existence has now provided me with yet another reason not to get a pet for the children.

These will change my life

And, finally, style (the home variety): among the things homeschoolers REALLY like to buy...can one ever have enough bookshelves?  And these fold flat when not in use!  Now you have a place to put all the schoolbooks that your children insist on losing during the year.  ALL the books will stay RIGHT HERE, on this marvelous, foldable set of shelves. This is the story we homeschoolers tell ourselves, in that idealistic time known as mid-summer, before another ugly academic year has begun to trample all our pedagogical dreams.

A thing of beauty...

Ditto for this thing here...I swear to you, it's all the rage in homeschool circles.  THIS year, there will be pencils.  They will be sharpened, without having to search for batteries first.  NO ONE will spend the morning on the couch whining over and over about not being able to find a usable writing implement. Peace and joy will reign, forever and ever, amen.

  1. That pencil sharpener isn't big enough to stick my head into, which would be helpful to me since I am in that 34%.

  2. Ooh, pretty pencil sharpener! We have one of the old school kind mounted on a wall, but a portable one would be handy.

  4. Adding bookcases. Getting your kid (or spouse) to actually put things there when they're done with them....how do you solve that one, SC? Tell me.

    1. How sad is it that I do not even expect them to do that anymore? No, I will be QUEEN OF THE BOOKCASES and place everything on them in the proper order. It is my fate.

    That's a nice sharpener.
I think teens are less stressful than toddlers. I mean, if you can shut them in their rooms when they get all moody and stuff. Then they're not so bad.

  7. The manual pencil sharpener is one of my favorite appliances.

When would a bookshelf ever not be in use? All bookshelves around here are full to bursting.

  8. My oldest who is 20 gives me the most grief.

  9. My teens manage to ignore me most of the time, which means I am always surprised when they think they should be allowed to borrow the car. (Also, suddenly I am home alone because everyone went to work without telling me.)
Boy #3 did happily show me the new pencil sharpener he bought to take to college. It is exactly like the one I purchased when we were homeschooling.

But if you are always getting more books, why would you ever need to have a flat-folding bookcase? (Except for moving... that would rock.)

    1. I don't. I am enamored with the concept for no reason. Although, since it folds flat, it comes already assembled - so there's that.

  10. I wish even non-homeschooling families would "centralize" their kids' school supplies so that they would come to my class minus the excuses the abound regarding not being able to locate pencil/paper/folder, etc

  11. Hubby keeps all extra school supplies from last year in an old laptop bag. If we need a pencil, some loose leaf paper or an eraser, we know where to get them.
I still end up buying new everything each summer, as the little kids like to use the crayons, paper etcetera to draw.
