Steppin' Out

(To the tune of "On top of Old Smokey...")

"The grave will deca-a-a-y you,
And turn you to dust...."

Doesn't that sound like a good verse for a song on a children's CD? And the guy sings it so cheerfully, too...I almost drove the car into a hydrant while trying to (hurriedly) turn the volume way down. I'm surprised the next verse wasn't something like, "The worms and the ma-a-a-ggots, Will eat out your eyes...."

Just finished paying another chunk of money to our local library. I don't really want to talk about it right now. Amazing but true.

I stopped off at the grocery store after my weigh-in this morning (down 2 pounds - go, me!) (even with all those Twix and Girl Scout cookies) and realized at the checkout that I had left my wallet in the car. Normally, I would have been all annoyed at myself, having to waste time to run out there and run back in. But not today! Nope! Because, from now on, inefficiency pays off. I bought myself an official Weight Watchers pedometer this morning, so leaving my wallet in the car translated into 400 extra steps.

I've heard that one's goal should be 10,000 steps a day - I'm only up to 3,000, so I need to get up and jog around the living room or something. Maybe I'll march in place while I prep dinner.

It's so exciting to have a goal.

We woke Larry up last night and demanded mousetraps for the attic above Anna's bedroom. It was that bad. He was pretty nice about it. So, understandably, I have mice on the brain. Which may explain why, just now, I thought we had mice running up and down in the walls of our den. Lots of them, hordes of them....until Theo kindly explained that those were raindrops I was hearing. I wouldn't believe him until he opened a window.

They sounded like mice.

Maybe it's the food deprivation. I'm hallucinating. Yeah, that's it...time for an emergency Twix...

  1. I can't decide whether to congratulate you (The Weight-Watchers Twix Queen), or stew in my own snark.

I just got back from my weigh-in, where I was treated to the most consternated look I've gotten since my fourteenth birthday. I was up five-and-a-half pounds, to a half pound OVER my original start weight.

Oooookay. Guess I'm off to eat cabbage.

  4. Including myself, you are now the 3rd person I've talked to who lost weight eating Girl Scout cookies. If I'd known that earlier I'd have consumed vast quantities.

  5. I've always wanted a pedometer. I wonder how many steps I take just going back and forth from the dining room to the kitchen to get my kids more food. And then they beg and whine until I give them half of mine, too. I'm thinking of renting them out as diet aids.

  6. How do you do it? I'm doing WW - I workout ALL THE TIME, as in every day for 60-80 minutes and I'm not budging. Ugh.

  7. Ahhhh, thanks for the laugh. Except for the mice part. Mice creep me out!

  11. We have had quite a mouse issue in our apartment building. They freak me out.

    Humans = inside
    all other animals = outside

  12. I just got a call from the library today and can't figure out what's overdue (thought we'd turned everything in--darn it!).

I'm with Valerie. Mice creep me out too. But still, you made me laugh.

  13. I'm currently enjoying a Symphony bar -milk chocolate with almonds and toffee chips. All this blogging and eating chocolate does not bode well for my future shape. And I just dished out over $25 to the local library...

  14. Eating a Kit-Kat and losing weight has so never happened to me! Keep it up.

  15. As always, you're hysterical, but I'm especially loving the fact the I'm not the only one who has financed a new wing at the local library!
And that can't be a real song! Can it? It can't!

(My word verification is kyxouids. That's Greek for squid salad.)

  17. Congrats on the weight loss!

Perhaps I need a pedometer because I can't seem to loose any. But 10,000 steps a day? That would mean I would be jogging in place while watching tv...but wait...maybe that's the point.

  18. Yes, I love a good parady. Glad you were down a couple of pounds - congrats! It's amazing how many steps a person is supposed to get in each day especaially when they spend their time blogging.

  19. I thought the rain on our roof last night was mice as well!

Actually, it's been a couple of months since I've heard the attic scrabbling. We did put down the little yellow D-con boxes. I found one dead mouse in our driveway, just outside the basement door. I kinda hated to think about him dragging himself across the basement floor, heading for the light, reaching the outside and giving one last gasp. I left the D-con down, though.

  20. Well, if food deprivation can make you imagine a mouse invasion, I bet it can make you buy cute purses and crazy new yarn on a whim too;) Who sang the grave song? So curious.

  21. Ugh.. I always end up paying my library too. Last time it was 30 cents for one book and the people standing in line beside me looked at me like I had just announced to burn the place down. Losers. I hope they all got parking tickets.

  22. I laughed at the stare-at-the-face-of-death lyrics: you never know when that stuff is going to pop out at your children. Mine were 3 and watching Caillou when all of a sudden the storyline focusses on a dead bird. Then Caillou turns all angst-ridden thinking Grandma is going to die. I wanted to slap his big fat cartoon head.

  23. I'm going to have to pass on my librarian brownie recipe-I know the scourge of the library fine.

  24. I would have totally thought it was mice, too. (I laughed out loud!)

Congratulations on the two pounds, especially since you prevailed against two fierce opponents (Twix and GS cookies). Impressive, indeed.

I need to start wearing my step counter again. I decided a while ago that I just need a treadmill that would power my computer, so that if I wanted to be online, I would have to walk. I would lose weight in no time. Genius, I think. Someone invent that please.

  25. Is that a real song?

One of our kid CDs has the song "Found a Peanut" on it... it talks about eating a peanut, getting sick and dying and then the last verse... explains it was a dream... just sick. I skip over it though and the kids get all upset.

  26. That is GREAT news! Maybe I should buy a pedometer and get off the computer so that I could be down 2 pounds instead of up 20.

  29. Good job on the 2 pounds! But now I want a Twix. Step in place while cooking dinner? Never thought of that!

  32. What is it with kids music? Have you ever listened to the lyrics of "My Darling Clementine"? The guys all in love with her, then she drowns so he's all upset... until the part where he "kissed her little sister and forgot my Clementine." How sick is that?! We have it on this cheesy-cd my daughter had when she was little- and wouldn't you know my husband found it and played it for my son who LOVES it (of course) and insist on listening to it All. Night. Long. It's fabulous falling asleep to "A Tisket A Tasket" every night. Really.

  33. Check out my post about how to catch a live mouse (not on purpose, mind you). I do not know how to put a link in a comment so you will have to copy and paste.
