The following items were found in Rachel's nightstand drawer the other day: scissors, hair, and a bunny head ruthlessly severed from a cute hair scrunchy. Lab analysis has not yet confirmed whether the hair is human or Barbie. Numerous small stuffed animals on perpetrator's bed were, thankfully, unharmed, though quite shaken up by the beheading of their tiny compatriot. Needless to say, I have once more gathered up all the scissors in the house for safekeeping; not that this tactic has stopped Rachel before, of course, but at least it might slow her down.
So, apparently, it's true: if you don't let kids watch TV, they come up with creative ways to amuse themselves. Isn't it great?
I always knew the negativity about television watching was overrated. It's just a toy store conspiracy.
ReplyDeleteDogs amuse themselves in similar ways. Sadly ours don't watch TV.
ReplyDeleteQuick, turn the TV on!
ReplyDeleteI imagine that Not Me lives at your house, whenever he/she isn't at mine. As in, "Who did this?"
"Not Me!"
I had a friend whose son cut his littele sister's hair off 3 times. Hello?! Wouldn't you get a lockbox for the scissors after the second time?
ReplyDelete"Amuse" or "injure".
ReplyDeleteWith my kids usually one leads to the other. The amusemement causes injury, or the injury (of the other child) causes amusement.
jenn - Believe me, we did everything in our power to keep scissors out of Rachel's hand during her rampage 2 years ago; but she was unstoppable.
ReplyDeleteShe needs to get better at hiding her stash. I don't know what it is that makes kids cut off the heads from toys. My daughter didn't have a Barbie with a head still attached. The running joke was, "she's all body, no brains". We never found the heads.
ReplyDeleteMy kids turned a big cardboard box into a slide yesterday. It kept falling and they kept hurting themselves (not badly), but I let them keep going rather than distract them with a video. Consider it a physics lesson! :P
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely gonna have to keep an eye on that one... ;)
ReplyDeleteOh Wow,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that I read the back posts about the beheadings...
My little guy can find the scissors wherever I put them.
Mostly he cuts paper right now,
but anything in reach is fair game.
Here's hoping that it is Barbie hair in the drawer...not "sister" hair that was once held by the scrunchie from which the bunny head was cut...
I still find it funny that she didn't harm her own toys...just her siblings'
Blessings, EJT
Hey, my "word" verification is
WOWIC....I like that...might have to use it sometime!
I confiscated all the scissors when the kid took the tip of her finger off and we landed in the ER. (Where they did nothing, because it really wasn't a big deal...)
ReplyDeleteRight now my youngest is in the art stage: Body art, wall art, table art, fridge art. I keep throwing the markers away, she keeps finding the markers that we haven't been able to find for years.
ReplyDeletePoor Laura, age 3 1/2, has had 3 horrible haircuts in a row. The first one was just before her second birthday, when my then 6 yr old decided to fix her hair. It finally grew out by last fall. She looked really cute in the picture we had taken last october for my icon. less than 2 weeks later, my 5 yr old cut her hair again. His explanation, "it was in her eyes, so he fixed it". Now that it has grown out again, she just cut all her bangs off, buzz cut short. Everytime we see a scissors around the house, we confiscate it. I think the big kids must have their school scissors in their backpacks and not at school in their desks? Thats the only was they could find them easily. Hubby now locks up every scissors he finds in a toolbox in his locked workshop. It's pain to get out the keys and go fet a scissors, but at least her hair should be safe for a while. :)
ReplyDeleteI've caught Nicholas trying to use a wooden toy knife to behead a stuffed dog. He also likes to pretend he's cutting the tail off his mermaid. I think he's pretending she's turning into a human girl, and he needs to off the tail first.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fantastic! One year my kids took a bunch of beanie babies and cut them up and sewed zebra heads on squirrel bodies and unicorn horns on kittens, pig heads on lion bodies-mutant beanies they called them. We sold them for $10 each at a yard sale. Boredom pays.
ReplyDeleteCreative child. She will make an amazingly successful modern artist if she can just learn to combine those elements into works of art.
ReplyDeleteI knew there was a good reason why I let my kids watch television.
ReplyDeleteSend that girl to cosmetology school.
Or taxidermy school.
Or boarding school ;0)
My son once cut off all his eyelashes.
I'm taking notes. But so far I hardly manage to keep the crayons out of reach. There's crayon everywhere.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have done a little experiment and even if you let them sit in front of screens all day, they will still find ways to use their time creatively. Either way you are screwed. Just hang onto your hat hope you survive the ride.
