Lullaby, And Good Night...

I don't have a napping kid anymore; Susie is 3 already and if I let her sleep midday, she's up until 10 in the evening. But I've spent over 16 years lying down after lunch with one baby or another, and I've come to require that little siesta for myself. In fact, I get really cranky without it and throw tantrums. I even have a special blankie that I bought at IKEA (a purple throw) that I need to use at nap time. I don't know what I'll do if I ever have to pursue full-time employment - can people nap at work?

If there is one thing that raising kids has done for me, it has given me an abiding appreciation for sleep. Aaaah! Isn't that a pretty word? Sleeeeeep. I just loooove the feel of a cool pillowcase against my cheek. Is this weird? Tell me if it's weird. Then I'll know not to mention my addiction to anyone in real life. It will be our little secret. And I'll train the kids to say, "Mommy's upstairs ironing" when neighbors come knocking on our door midday.

No, no one would believe that.

How about "Mommy's upstairs cleaning the bathroom"? Forget it, serious credibility issues there, too. I need an alibi for my afternoon snooze! Anybody got one? G-rated, of course...we don't need the neighbors laughing at us again.

It's not too late to comment on yesterday's post and be eligible to win Leave The Building Quickly! I didn't begin to do this book justice yesterday. It stands up well to a second reading, and is chockful (sp?) of a variety of semi-insane observations and analogies that catch you by surprise. (Well, they catch me by surprise, anyway - maybe I'm slow.) The essays range all over the place, from her beloved grandmother's Alzheimers to her son's fear of fire alarms to her brush with a life-threatening disease. And it's all funny! Don't you find senile old people and traumatized children and near-death experiences amusing? No? Well, you will, after you read this book.

I don't know how she does that.

Tomorrow, a post documenting my weekly refrigerator sweep. Because, believe it or not, I do try to clean it out regularly...

  1. Napping is such a wonderful thing. Any mom that came to your door should understand. But if you really need an excuse have them say it is quiet, meditation time. Every mommy needs that and it isn't a lie.

  2. I know exactly how you feel about sleep. I seem to have lost my knack for the 15 minute nap and I really miss it.

  3. I'm all about the nap. I used to feel guilty about it (shouldn't I be doing dishes or laundry while my kid naps?) but these days it's just how I roll and I like it.
You clean out your fridge weekly?! That's amazing!

  4. You may have noticed that I have been mia for a while. Today I caught up on some blog reading which means I spent an hour on your page. How can you post every day? Seriously, that is a skill! Plus, now thanks to the items you share I have added a new blog to my reader list. Is there any way to get paid for reading blogs? We established long ago that getting paid for writing them was never in the cards for me, but reading for money, I could get into that! Anyway, thanks for the hour of entertainment and the many more that came before.

  5. How did you manage to nap with a baby with another (or two, or three, or...) little kids around? I used to nap with my first, but that pretty much ended once I had two. (I HAD to nap with my first. He'd wake up if I left. I used to joke about gnawing my arm off to get away, because I was working from home at the time, except, not during nap time.)

  6. How about "Mommy is USING the bathroom and can't come to the door right now." Nothing too embarrassing there. We've all got to go. Right?

And I can't wait to see what you find in the back of the big, full American refrigerator!

  7. No need to come up with an alibi. Naptime was my own private time out for almost six years. Last year due to school schedules it went bye bye, but we still have a 'quiet time' around here. If you are in my home between 12-2pm, we rest. Which for my four year old means playing quietly in her room. Or not so quietly, as long as she doesn't come downstairs. . .

  8. I LOVE napping, too, and will still partake in a midday slumber. There, I finally admitted it. I should be cleaning, but need the nap to keep me from killing my kids by late afternoon.

  9. Lord have mercy I miss my nap. Mine was 10 to 15 minutes in my car in the school pick up line. My body got so used to it that I was a year back working before I quit yawning at 3:00 every afternoon!

  10. The idea of cleaning out my fridge right now scares me. I have to do it on Sundays if I am gonna do it cuz trash comes on Mondays and I forget to do it on Sundays.. On purpose??? Maybe. I don't know.

    KEEP BELIEVING

  11. Hahaha! Sleep *is* a pretty word. Siesta sounds even more beautiful!

  12. "Mom is doing some research for her latest post"? or

"Mom is practicing deep breathing"? or

"Mom is lolling around midday fulfilling a deep-seated need to rest her cheek on a white pillow case but will be available after her seratonin levels recalibrate"?

    I don't think I'm helping...
    Blessings!

  13. Before we had kids, some of my husband's coworkers would tease him about being so old with no kids. He would always smile slightly and say, "You know what else? I sleep at night." And then they would glare daggers at him.

  14. I tried to convince my kids (9, 8, 4 and infant) that a nap is just another word for a siesta. Which sounds a lot like fiesta, only quiet. They aren't buying. -farmsuite miriam

Yeah, I feel your pain. Mr. G gave up naps at age 2, but he's up until 9:30 at night and ready to roll by 6:30 in the morning. I should embrace his inner demon but I find myself cursing him instead for wrecking MY sleep.

  16. I'm going to steal that ironing excuse. Oh wait, I don't have an iron.

  17. How about...

"My Mom is having some quiet time" (vague); or,

"My Mom is upstairs working" (a possiblity); or,

"My Mom just came back from jogging and is taking a shower." (impressive); or,

"My Mom is putting Susie down for her nap." (Note: sequester Susie); OR

"My mom is setting up her old comment system on her blog" (hint, hint)

I have been a mother for 21 years and I still fantasize about a decent night's sleep! After a certain age (TEEN age!!) children turn into vampires and stay up all night again. They don't necessarily need and definitely do not want your presence or attention, but for some reason, they don't comprehend that after 10 p.m., conversations should be held in whispers and the volume on TV, video games, cell phones, music players, etc should be muted. For some reason, mine feel the need to cook (i.e microwave) at 2:30 a.m. and the volume at which they do this rivals that of the weed blower from the neighbor's lawn service that revs up at 7:30 a.m. outside my bedroom window. Forget sex drugs and rock and roll! My fantasy is a decent night's sleep!

  19. Um, I think I need to go take a nap.....
And my 4 year old suddenly needs a nap again. YEAH!

  20. I love to nap. Let me know when you come up with a good alibi. You have a blankie!

  21. Being a sleep deprived mom has left me with some weird emotions about sleep. I have this thing about waking anyone up. I just feel awful. I just know if I am asleep it is because I am dead and I would die again if someone woke me up. Naps are heaven. I think they are even better than chocolate. Heresy I know, but true.
How about, everyone goes in their room for some quiet time, and put a note on the door, do not disturb!

  22. Hahaha! I remember the death of the nap. I sat on my stairs and cried, and cried. At first I renamed it "reading hour," and plunked them in the crib with some books for an hour. And when they outgrew that, I just gave up any chance of being a good mom, and turned on the TV instead, lol!

  23. Do you need some more salsa for that fridge?

  24. I guess I'm one of the few lucky ones.

My 4 year old still takes naps and on some days depending on my 7 year olds attitude - she takes a nap too! And the baby some days will take 3 naps!

And my suggestion for an excuse:
Tell them you're sorting/folding laundry. With 6 kids that has to take a while....
