Well, I think it's excellent - some of you may hate it.
My favorite sentence:
If the pro-choice stance is so precarious that a story about someone who chose to carry a risky pregnancy to term undermines it, then CBS is not the problem.
How dare she muddy this controversy with logic? The nerve of that gal!
I liked that article! Thanks for the link. Did you see the piece in Slate? i can't paste the link. It's called the invisible dead. It's good too, but has a totally different view on the ad. I don't agree with everything there, but some points are pretty good.
ReplyDeleteKaren, I got a rather disturbing diagnosis last week for the child that I am carrying. I am 25 weeks pregnant, 38 years old, and the little girl I am pregnant with has a small spina bifida near the base of her spine. I have been so upset, but you know hearing the Tebow's story has brought me such comfort. Doctors are often wrong. And that's what the NOW gals will never understand, maybe the message isn't about their cause.
ReplyDeleteOne very, very bright lady, who happens to be 100% correct. I am Catholic and pro-choice, though I've heard that combination isn't really possible...but the beliefs of others aren't something that should be dismissed or indiscriminately deemed inappropriate because they differ from our own. Throwing red paint on women outside of abortion clinics is wrong, this ad isn't.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome article! I can't believe CBS and the Washington Post have actually stepped up and are supporting First Amendment rights. I usually don't put a lot faith in the main stream media.
ReplyDeleteGood article. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWow! Kudos to Sally Jenkins! She did a stellar job supporting the reasons to air the commercial while still upholding her own converse belief. She hit the nail on the head when she finger-pointed at the protesters who are not pro-choice, but stringent pro-abortion supporters.
ReplyDeleteI am pro-life, but I respect a woman's choice to have control over her own body and I can see those who've strapped on their blinders on both sides of the abortion fence. Perhaps these "feminists" would be better served to direct their protests towards some of the more offensive and degrading commercials aired during the Superbowl. Talk about degrading to women. Shall we start with the Lingerie Bowl?
Interesting commentary. I like what Viv said too. I'm pro-choice and I feel like the activists on both sides of this issue don't want us to think, only follow. So what if his testimony convinces women not to have an abortion. Just don't take away my right to make the decision for myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link. I'm so glad to have someone talking sense about this ridiculous argument. She articulated everything I was thinking and feeling.
ReplyDeleteI think this ad is actually about choice, and I really don't have a problem with CBS airing it. What I do have a problem with is the ads they have chosen not to show in past years, such as the one for United Church of Christ, which showed a gay couple being welcomed into the church. Why did they refuse that one? I don't have a problem with Tim Tebow or his mother. I think their story is a great story about CHOICE. I do have a problem with James Dobson and Focus on the Family, as they assume that it's their business to make sure that everyone makes the same choice, the one they preach.
ReplyDeleteBecause I live under a rock, I hadn't even heard of this brouhaha. That article makes sense. Stupid me, I once thought feminism was about choice.
ReplyDeleteIt is very, very hard not to like Tim Tebow.
I want to know when pro-choice became the same thing as pro-abortion?
ReplyDeleteIt is possible to believe that women have the right to choose and believe that it's wrong to abort.
The difference is that I leave the consequences to the woman, her conscience and her God.
Who am I to make judgements on someone else's morality?
Great post. Thanks for addressing a very touchy subject.
I also live under a rock and didn't know about this. That article was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteGreat article. Don't you love it when people are reasonable?
ReplyDeleteI've listened to some of the coverage on this and one of the reasons this ad is running is that ad revenue is down--so ads that might have been turned away in other years under the "not courting controversy" umbrella are more acceptable to the networks now.
I'm pro-choice, but I'm not opposed to anyone having their say in a respectful way.
I think this may be the best pro-choice article I have ever read! FINALLY someone is walking the pro-choice talk!
ReplyDeleteThe "National Organization of Women Who Only Think Like Us" has, in the past, revealed themselves to be pro-abortion and not pro-choice.
I will feel sad if a friend chooses abortion (and this happened recently) but I will not criticize or preach or hate. My job is to be a friend and love.
Thank you for posting this article; it was an excellent read. I, too, am amazed that CBS is refusing to show this and that NOW is causing such a raucous. I'm really wondering when the definition of a feminist became so stridently "only that which is the opposite of a traditional, patriarchal female." Shouldn't feminists embrace any choice that a woman wants to make, whether they agree or not?
ReplyDeleteI think the article makes a lot of sense, too. I admit I get itchy when the religious stuff starts getting mixed into it, though. He is, after all, a member of a team. It is not all about him and his personal beliefs.
ReplyDeleteSuperbly written and exactly right on--thank you for that link! I just emailed it to my daughter. The one who, when our family was hospitalized with a CO poisoning from the malfunctioning heating while I was pregnant with her, three doctors tried to warn me that, you know...she was going to be brain damaged, and I might want to...
ReplyDeleteAnd one said, She lost brain cells, yes. I promise you you will never see it.
He was the one who was right, and she's been accepted into the top grad school of her choice.
You know? I owe that OB back in New Hampshire a thank you note. Thank you for getting me to think about it. I would have chosen what I chose anyway, but it sure felt good to have him on my side.
Have you dug out from under the snow yet? Is your local Starbucks even open? Enough with the goofing off and more with the posting!
ReplyDeleteI forgot about that controversy. but I'm definitely pro thinking. The super bowl was on at my house but I never even thought to find out if they decided to air the commercial or not. Of course, I was busy helping someone barf her guts out at the time. I hope I'm on another continent when she gives birth because if this is the ruckus she makes to barf, just imagine childbirth...
