Parental Trickery

Jillybean commented on the failed-kale post  2 days ago that I should make the kids cook.  That way, they wouldn't be so critical of my cooking.

What she doesn't realize is that my teaching them to help in the kitchen is precisely the reason David was weighing in with his seasoned (no pun intended) opinions on how to improve my kale cookery.  That particular young lad can cook pizza, lasagna, szechuan broccoli, and quesadillas with the best of them.

No meat, though - he's an ardent vegetarian.  And therein, my friends, lies my secret to getting him to help out in the meal-preparation department:

Me: (loudly) Gee, I wonder what I should make for dinner tonight?  (Opening fridge) Hmmm, there's some ground beef - I'll throw together some sloppy joes.

David:  Let me cook!

It's that simple.

  1. All I have to do is say "Who wants to cut with a sharp knife?" and my 6yo comes running to help with dinner. I'm up for Mom of the Year.

  2. Send him to me. I love sloppy joes. Also? Buy him hamburger meat to bring along.

  3. I need a child in my house who cooks. Oh wait. Then I would actually have to let them in the kitchen and unfortunately that really messes with my need to keep the kitchen CLEAN.

  4. Hope you don't mind that I'm asking, but why doesn't David eat meat/poultry?

  5. My son is also vegetarian and loves to cook! What is up with these boys? It's fantastic, but at the same time, it makes grocery shopping a whole new adventure.

  6. Meaning, David is volunteering to cook something that ISN'T meat so that he has something to eat also...I have a feeling I didn't make that clear, judging from Suzy's comment.

  7. @SubWife - He decided at age 6 that meat was gross; and that was it. But he isn't an animal lover, either.

  11. Someday he's going to marry a woman who will BLESS YOU every day of their life together. A man who can cook is SUCH a fine thing.
