The Lost Decade

Could y'all do me a favor?  At least those of you who were not immersed solely in childbearing throughout the 1990's?  That is my lost decade, musically speaking.  Apparently I spent those years listening to my cassette tapes from the 70's and 80's while reading interesting fiction such as Siblings Without Rivalry and How To Talk So Your Kids Will Listen.  Could you help a girl out by sharing your favorite 90's songs in the comments?

Yes, I know, 10 whole years.  It's ridiculous.  But so many of my friends who are younger than me have all these musical references I don't recognize.  Help me act hip.  Thanks.

(I missed all of Seinfeld, too.)

  1. I missed most of the 80's and some of the 90's. I have no idea what happened musically or politically without going and looking it up!

  2. How about the Traveling Wilburys? Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Bob Dylan. They only managed to get one album out before Roy Orbison passed away, but it was a good one!
However, I had 4 babies in that decade, so I'm probably not the one to be asking since I was memorizing Barney songs against my will.

  3. At first I thought I was right there with you, having grown up with AM radio and then not listening to anything in college. However, thanks to the wonder of Google and this list brought it all screaming back. How could I forget "I'm too sexy" and "MMMBop?" Clearly, legends in their own time.

  6. PS-You really didn't miss anything with 90's music. It was pretty bad. I spent all of that era like you listening to music from the 70's & 80's.

  7. I've missed the last 35 years of music.

    I am 35 years old.

Music, of the fashionable sort, does not interest me.

That this makes me sound like a toad concerns me not one wit.

  9. I only missed from 1995 on. I'll hear people talk about 90's bands and I'm like, "never heard of them". But then I'll hear the song and it is familiar but I had no idea who sang it. It makes me sad that the 80's are really the only music I'm familiar with.

I certainly don't care about music these days. It all sounds the same to me. These youngsters have such bad taste. I miss Wham! and Duran Duran.

  10. I was about to comment on how sad that is... but then I realized that after my first was born in 2002, I don't have much idea of what has been going on, especially musically :)
I graduated from college in 1996, so the music from that era is quite memorable to me. I love Dave Matthews Band (Crash into Me is a great song), The Distance by Cake, Green Day had a lot of fun songs, Nirvana Unplugged was a great album... Those are the first things that come to mind. Good luck catching with the 90's :)

  11. @kcinnova - Honey, our oldest kids are the same age. You are in the same boat as me, as the Traveling Wilbury's are 1988. I remember them fondly.

  12. @NavHeloWife - No, Raffi and his ilk certainly do not count. If they did, I would be hipper than hip. All together now: "The more we get together, together, together..."

  13. My lost ten years are going to be 2004-2014. So I have four more years to be ignorant. Rather than despressing, that feels like a relief!
I spent the nineties listening to stuff I never listen to now- Dave Matthews Band and Sarah McLaughlin.

  14. You missed nothing significant IMHO. The 90's sucked for music. All they did was retread the 80's with less ingenuity. And kill MTV.

  15. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains. Grunge rules!

  17. I can't help - I was also immersed in Sesame Street and childrens' songs. I rejoined adult life around 2000.

  18. I had (and still have) eclectic musical taste all over the board. But I was in college for the first part of the 90s and having LOTS of fun in the club/music scene in Providence for a couple years after that, so... Pearl Jam. Oasis. Smashing Pumpkins. Dave Matthews Band. Big Head Todd & the Monsters. Nine Inch Nails. Beastie Boys. Rage Against the Machine. Sarah MacLachlan. Tori Amos. Indigo Girls. REM. Green Day. Toad the Wet Sprocket (they might be more late 80s). Lemonheads. Red Hot Chili Peppers. U2. Counting Crows. Black Crowes. Van Halen. Stone Temple Pilots. Oy, I could go on and on and on and on.

But seriously? Nirvana, SO overrated. Couldn't stand them then, can't stand them now. The only songs I like are their covers, and the originals are better.

  19. alright folks, let me enlighten you. the 90s were my teenage decade so i think i know a little bit (though it is more european music).

first off, the 90s were the boyband decade. do boys II men, backstreet boys, n'sync ring a bell? basically any of their songs were no 1 hits.
the 90s was also the time when rap turned into music for white kids.
grunge was en vogue, played by bands such as nirvana.

personally my favorite songs are "back for good" and "never forget" by take that and "nothing compares to you" by Sinéad O'Connor.

there is a list from vh1 about the best songs of the 1990s, maybe that helps?

  20. SC, you're right. I just like to think I'm younger than I am.
The high schoolers I know bemoan the fact that they know all the songs their parents play on the oldies station (you know, the stuff from the 1970's and 1980's). I had a great time on the band bus this fall since they all listen to music I know. "Take On Me" has a resurgence of popularity.

  21. Oooohhhhh the '90s are my decade, baby!! Let me go through my entire iPod list... hang on... OK. Ahhhhh nostalgia.

My favorite bands of the 1990s, in no particular but fairly alphabetical order: Bush (always #1 in my mind. Love Gavin). Smashing Pumpkins (NOT the new stuff, the old original stuff like Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness). Green Day. Barenaked Ladies (the guys who now do the theme song for "The Big Bang Theory"). Blink-182. Korn. Eminem. Everclear. Garbage (it always, always takes me back to "Romeo and Juliet" with Leonado DiCaprio and Claire Danes). Limp Bizkit. Lit. Nine Inch Nails. The Offspring. Orgy. Rammstein. Seven Mary Three. Smashmouth. Stabbing Westward. Third Eye Blind. Cake.

Couldn't stand Dave Matthews OR Nirvana. Obnoxiously overplayed in my opinion.

    Ahhhhhh thanks... I needed that.
