Ear Me Out

In our family, the girls get their ears pierced on their 12th birthdays (that is, when they are old enough to take care of the piercings themselves).  When Anna came by on my birthday last week, she reminded me that, when I took her to get her ears pierced 8 long years ago, I had told her she could return the favor when I turned 50.

"Really?" I asked.  "I said that?"

"Yup!" she said, as she handed me a gift bag that contained, among other things, a pair of earrings.

I promise you, I will NOT be doing this.
Well! Consider the gauntlet thrown.  My jubilee year has, apparently, become my year of living dangerously.  Think about it - so  far I have done a 30-mile bike-a-thon (absurd!), plus a walk/run 5K (unheard of!).  And this weekend my very squeamish self accompanied Anna to the mall, where, sitting in the special chair in which Anna had sat 8 years before, I let a perfect stranger PUNCH HOLES IN MY EARS.

Yes, actually, Anna did have to hold my hand.  Do you have a problem with that?

Soothing puppy picture instead...
So now here I am, trying to get used to having these lumpy things in my earlobes.  I confess, it's sort of weirding me out.  Because I'm old and set in my ways, for sure.

Old, but still, as we have discussed recently, susceptible to peer pressure...

[Well, aren't I sorry I searched on images for ear piercings!  I'm going to go throw up now.]

  1. I'm not going to go google for ear piercings, but I saw one last week that just creeped me out. My 14 yo son even commented that he didn't like that. The lady had huge holes in her ears, about 1.5-2 INCHES in diameter, with some sort of shells looking like they were balancing in the holes. Looked painful to me!

  2. I'm not going to look at those images either thanks anyway - will take your word for it.
I think it's great that you've had your ears pierced - well done!

  3. I think it's great that Anna remembered--that must have been a sweet birthday present all in itself.

I recently (*cough*) re-pierced my (*cough*) navel, now that I'm done with the whole childbearing thing and lost all that weight through anxiety. Making lemonade, I figure. I can totally rock the navel piercing at almost 40, too.

Your first piercings? It's all belly rings and barbels in the tongue after this, you know...

  5. ah, you are never too old.
And now on to the fun part of buying pretty things!
I use to do this when I work for a store back in my 20's.
I only had one person pass out on me.
I hope this is not a gate-way piercing for you.

  6. I didn't get my ears pierced until I was 16, and it was so horrible I swore never to have anything else pierced ever. (I'll spare you the gory medical details, but it *did* require a doctor visit. Just follow whatever instructions they gave you for disinfecting the piercings *religiously*.)

  7. So sweet of Anna to remember!
I got my ears pierced at 18 (my mom said 16, but then I chickened out). Then I got a second piercing a year later but I didn't follow those instructions "religiously" (RobinH has good advice!) and that one grew over.

Now I need to know your favorite color(s) so I can make you a pair of earrings to wear when you finally remove the little trainer studs! :)

  9. The girls in our family get their eyes pierced at about three months old. It sounds odd, but nobody has complained.

I think it's lovely that Anna remembered that and followed through.
