Nothing exciting, today. Well, unless you call my teen daughter screaming, "Mommy! Fire!" from the kitchen exciting. I ran in there (without my camera, darn) to find flames leaping up from the burner all around my 12-qt pot. Even though I am a veteran of many oven and stove fires, this particular display of pyrotechnics was quite impressive. Luckily, it died down when I turned the burner off; and I coated the remaining embers with a generous sprinkling of baking soda to make sure nothing relit.
So there it sits. For some reason, it didn't occur to me to actually clean the mess up. I mean, I just cleaned the stove, remember? I have photographic proof.
I'm exhausted tonight (firefighting really takes it out of me); I hope I will be up to the task of creating a volcano cake for Brian's birthday tomorrow. I trust that a volcano cake is easier to make than a tornado costume was. And I have to wrap the Lego set that Larry picked up on his lunch hour today, once we show it to David to make sure it isn't another duplicate. Of course we will be having Brian's favorite dinner - Skillet Lasagna. Only, the boys call it Kill it! Lasagna as they stab at it with their forks. Which behavior irritates Anna to no end. She also hated it when the boys taught Rachel (back when she was 3) to sing, "Pig brains for dinner! Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum!" Little brothers are annoying that way.
But it was a catchy tune. Sometimes I still find myself humming it. Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.
I have a couple of good oven fire stories myself--I think you've given me a post idea!
ReplyDeleteHave a fun birthday celebration.
cleaning the stove is not allowed more than once a year. trust me.
ReplyDeleteYou'd just cleaned the stove??? Boy, would I be MAD. But at least Anna didn't just stand there sulking while the house burned down around her...could'a been worse, right?
ReplyDeleteHow scary. Glad you got it out without incident. I'm such a wimp about kitchen fires. I do NOT remain cool, calm and collected.
ReplyDeleteVolcano cake, hmmmm. Sounds ambitious.
A little whining, a little teasing, a little sibling rivalry, a little fire.... A little typical day???
ReplyDeleteWow!
Cleaning up baking soda hidden fires for you is like finishing the load of whites in the laundry for me. It can sit there for a little longer. I just can't seem to get around to doing it.
KEEP BELIEVING
my husband teases me that I am always saying wait, let me take a picture, I wish you would have gotten one so I could show him, see others snap before we do what ever it is we have to do also. Glad it was no big deal.
ReplyDeleteThat kind of thing always happens after you clean your stove. It's the same type of thing as getting a rainstorm right after you wash your car.
ReplyDeleteJust leave the stove dirty. It's safer that way.
A volcano cake? Are you going for Mother of the Year after all?
ReplyDeleteHeidi
Don't fight fires yourself. Way to exhausting.
ReplyDeleteCall in those hunky firefighter guys.
A volcano cake?!?! Is there baking soda involved? Might want to keep Anna away from it.
ReplyDeleteI had to comment on "once we show it to David to make sure" totally made me laugh out loud. I can totally imagine you guys being all sneaky and confirming with him. Too funny!
Yeah, that girl needs to know if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Let's teach her how to do armpit farts or something...
ReplyDeleteWell done on the fire fighting--do you get a merit badge for courage or something?
Nice one! I just found out that the oven can smell like a donut fryer if something with a lot of butter runs over in it . . .
ReplyDeleteNo fires (yet). I have exploded baked potatoes on at least three occasions, however (yes, I do pierce them with a fork first).
ReplyDelete"firefighting really takes it out of me"
ReplyDelete*snicker*
I vote for waiting on the cleaning until AFTER the volcano cake. 'Cuz that sounds messy...
ReplyDeleteTo date, my first kitchen fire is still my best. I set my oldest son's highchair tray on the stove with a burner on very low. So low, I thought it was off. Sadly it was just high enough to light the tray on fire and melt it to my stove. Campus maintenance (we were still in college) was not happy with me the next day!
ReplyDeleteIt's sort of a swing, isn't it? Pig brains for dinner - twirl!
ReplyDeleteJust the paired words 'tornado' and 'costume' made me laugh out loud.
I love it! A kitchen fire, a volcano cake, a tornado costume........... I'm sensing a theme here. :)
ReplyDeleteDo you have fire extinguishers in your house........ lots of them?
jules - you're right - I'll take "Natural Disasters" for 500, please, Alex...
ReplyDeletemrs. smith - I almost did that same thing once. Well, more than once.
manic mommy - try stabbing them twice.
mrs. mordecai - you are my kind of cook...
melissa - mommy merit badges? I like that idea!
mama bird - You know, that would have made it all worthwhile.
family adventure - No, I'm just feeling a little inadequate because of all those cakes Dawn at Because I Said So keeps showing off. Are you listening, Dawn? Cut it out.
