7 Quick Takes: IPhone Envy

It's still Friday, right? Well, let's get going then....

I told Larry that we should get IPhones for ourselves. Because they are fun. And then I wouldn't lose my grocery list. Stick-in-the-mud that he is, Larry pointed out that it doesn't make economic sense for us to spend over 1500 dollars a year for cellphone service. I hate when he gets all rational like that.

***************

How come the IPhone plan is so much more expensive than the other phones with touch screens and other fun stuff? Anyone out there in Blogland know the answer to that?

**************

Not that it matters - Larry is perfectly satisfied with our current "plan" - pay-per-minute cellphones which cost us all of 100 dollars a year per phone. Frugal does not equal fun, in case you were wondering.

**************

My bout of stomach flu 2 weekends ago produced a 3-pound weight loss at my next WW weigh-in. That gave me enough incentive to keep on starving for another 7 days, after which I once again stepped onto the Weight Watchers scale confident in the knowledge that I was even more svelte than the week before.

Only, I wasn't. The receptionist told me that I had gained a pound and a half. At which point I informed her that there was no way I had gained weight, I felt too hungry. Apparently no novice at dealing with irrational fat people, she said, "Well, maybe it's just the humidity."

My thoughts exactly...

*********************

Oil spill? Can we come up with a better phrase? It's not a spill so much as an explosion. An explosion that just won't quit. And for those of you wondering why the federal government hasn't managed to stop it yet, it's because they can't. No one can. We shouldn't have been drilling a mile underwater in the first place. It's hard to believe that no one foresaw this scenario.

*********************

Oh, and Governor Jindal? If you are so convinced that building those barrier islands is the right thing to do (and, heck, that plan sounds better than doing nothing), stop arguing over who is going to pay for it and get started. Over 40 miles of the berms have been approved by the Army Corps of Engineers already. While you're building them, you can argue over the other 60 miles and who is going to foot the bill. But don't stand there and do nothing and blame the federal government. As you yourself have said, "The strength of America is not found in our government. It is found in the compassionate hearts and the enterprising spirit of our citizens."

Quibble over the bill later, my friend. This oil spill is going to cost millions one way or another.

*****************

I know! Yet another bit of breathtakingly astute commentary by this armchair activist. What can I say? The world is lucky to have me.

G'night all, and pop on over to Conversion Diary's 7 Quick Takes - she doesn't waste your time with useless maunderings over the state of the nation the way I do.

  3. You know you're in weight watchers when you consider not wearing deodorant or a ponytail holder to a weigh-in. Because those might make up for the oreos you ate every day.

And that is why I stopped going to WW.
    Spill baby, spill.

  5. Just saw a commentary by Charles (bleah) Krauthammer in which he also says we shouldn't be drilling a mile down (good)...and we wouldn't be if the damn environmentalists would let us drill somewhere else. Sometimes I just get such a headache.

You didn't waste my time. Enjoyed it.

Love it! I will file that one away for future use!

  8. Awww, frugal doesn't equal fun?

I'm holding out on the frugal side. My phone is just a normal cell phone, but with a qwerty keyboard so texting isn't frustrating. No internet. Nothing fancy. I just know that putting the internet in the palm of my hand all day would be a bad, bad thing.

  9. I have heard that argument too. That it is really the environmentalists fault because they made the oil company drill so far out. But regardless of WHY they had to drill out so far, they still should of figured out a way to plug a leak if one should happen before they did it! Duh!

  10. I also want to know why Iphone plans are so expensive.

  11. I have a pay as you go cellphone because I usually end up with lose as you go service. Lost two.

They at least shouldn't be drilling without the technology in place to solve a problem like this. At my house, we've been calling it cancer of the Louisiana, as in "The U.S. has a bad case of cancer of the Louisiana. May have to remove the whole thing."

  12. Sorry, your husband is right. Keep your pay-per-minute phones and buy yourself iTouches. You'll get all the fun of an iPhone, without the monthly service bills. Oh, right, and without a camera and without a phone, but you already have phones. I'm completely happy with my thrifty pay-per-minute Nokia and my iTouch.

  13. I've never even SEEN an iphone. How about that, huh?

  14. If I had an expensive phone, the first time it got dropped, the screen would crack and it would be history. With my cheap phone, pay per minute net10 service, it has bouced off the ground several time and still works. Plus, if I lose it, It's $20 to replace, no biggie. :)

  15. They knew it was a possibility and they chose to go with the possibility rather than spending money to make it better. BP should be held accountable for every dollar spent on their mess. Or they'll just risk it again.

Oh, phones? I wanted an IPhone. Got an LG nv Touch instead, much cheaper by the month, and it's still kind of wasted on me--I know it does cool stuff, I mostly just don't (yet) know how.

  16. I'm with Larry on this one. I'm going with the pay per minute thing very soon. (I've been saying this for 6 weeks now)When I had Vcast (internet) on my Razr it cost me $68. a month. I took it off and Verizon swore it would go down to 41 a month but instead it went down to 42, 44, then 45 and now finally 46. It's BULLSHIT.

An iphone monthly charge here in LA is $100. There is no way I'm paying that just to be online. I spend enough time there as it is.

  17. 2 words--iPod Touch. All the fun of the i-phone (except the phone part) without the monthly bill. Even better, you can use Skype to make calls anywhere there is wi-fi.
