Do Not Ask For Whom The Bell Tolls

My day?  I spent it hiking through a national park with a friend celebrating her birthday week.  Yes, she IS taking a whole week, because she's turning 50 this year.  Then we went out to lunch with another friend.  I was doing fine until the birthday girl showed off her brand new AARP card.

Coming soon to a blogger near you...

4 months, people - that will be yours truly in just 4 more months.  So I'm taking suggestions - how should I celebrate my impending 50th?  Nothing is too unreasonable, but keep in mind that I have never been the type to enjoy male strippers.

  1. Don't get too overworked about that AARP offer. They just keep sending them, and sending them, and sending them, until you lose your mind to senility and accept the membership.

Happy Birthday! I think hiking in the woods is an excellent way to celebrate (plus in 4 months it will actually be warm enough to do that in comfort). The only thing missing is chocolate.

  2. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...you must have a bucket list lying around this blog somewhere...Can you get 50 somethings done? Maybe acts of kindness? IDK Can't wait to hear what you come up with to celebrate!

  3. Something that makes you feel young and fabulous. For me that will be kayaking with the Orcas in The San Juan Islands, but it doesn't have to be that spectacular. Maybe tell your husband you want spectacular and have your best friend offer to help. Focus on what you love. That's why my trip will include both friends and family.

Stay strong, sister. I'm right behind you.

Hmmm . . . or maybe a trip to San Diego to bask in some California sun.

  4. I did small things when turning 50 but I'm going to London for 53 in May. I still find it unbelievable that I am that old!!! After you visit Jenn in San Diego you can visit me too.

  6. My mom was so excited when she got her aarp card. I think that aarp was formed when 50 was old. It really isn't old now!

  7. Make a list of things you have always wanted to do (and can afford--or put on a credit card) and choose the one that really speaks to you!

  8. Greece. Or someplace Mediterranean with a view.

  9. Some sort of knitting retreat. Squam? Or *any* sort of retreat, really. Don't you keep talking about how you want to go to a blog conference?

  10. Definitely something you enjoy! I have been mulling over my own big birthday wish list (which is frighteningly invisible).
Oh, I know!! Coming out here for the Derfwad West Coast gathering in late summer/early fall!!

  11. Hmm. I say follow your bliss and do something somewhat outlandish but not stressful. This sort of "OMG, it's my 50th" energy is just prime for a freak-out of epic "IT MUST BE UH-MAY-ZING!" proportions. I vote for something rather chill ... which you will then blog about so that we can live vicariously through you, of course.

  12. A friend of mine turned 50 last fall so she and some of her lifelong girlfriends spent a 3 day weekend in New York City. Sounds like fun to me!

  13. We were totally broke when I turned 50 so I didn't en up doing anything. What I wanted to do was have a really nice dinner party just for female friends and family a night to celebrate being a grown-up woman. Maybe that is what I will do when I turn 60 this December!

Whatever you decide - enjoy it without guilt! It is hard for us to give that gift to ourselves.

  14. Weeeeelll... I suppose breast augmentation surgery is out of the question, eh?

And Glamour Shots is tacky. But a major spa makeover could be fun. Maybe learn to wear blusher. Who knows? What are The Girlfriends up for? Massage and painted toes?

Or maybe you and the hubs could go out for something that requires a strapless bra and a hotel room...

  15. I was teasing my husband over his AARP offers that kept coming in the mail when he turned 50 and I was, la dee dah, sing it with me, a mere babe of 49. And then mine started showing up too. At 49. He guffawed. I yelled No Fair! in AARP's general direction and nearly five years later we've still both refused to join.
