New Horizons

My plan for Mother's Day went well, although next year I must remember to clean the entire house (and not just the bathrooms) in preparation for my big day. It was hard to relax with all the clutter around. Also, I had to kill a centipede while Larry was out. I left the carcass for him to dispose of, however.

I did succeed in pulling out all my yarn stash and rearranging it and putting it all away again. I also untangled my half-finished projects, sorted my needles, and emptied out all my knitting bags.

(Believe it or not, non-knitters, this was a fun activity. I've been looking forward to it. And, I found a York Peppermint Patty in one of the bags. Bonus!)

You see, I have big plans this week, my friends, BIG plans. As soon as my size 0 40" circulars arrive (in 4-5 business days), I am going to learn to knit socks 2-at-a-time from the toe up.

I know! You're as excited as I am, I'm sure.

So! After opening the chocolate Larry gave me this morning (and duly sharing it with some very greedy children), I went to the bookstore where, pretending my beloved had bought me a gift card, I procured this book.

I feel as if a whole new life awaits me. A life where I can actually finish more than one pair of socks a year...a life where my stash of sock yarn will diminish to the point of my being justified in buying more...a life, in fact, where I might actually deliver on my year-old promise of a pair of homemade socks for my sweet, trusting 7-year-old daughter.

In short? A life without shame...

  1. Hi there, Id like to get into socks too. They sound like theyd be easily finished (= good for moms). My other 'thing' is cup cozies. Who brews anything in a teapot these days? So I started making mini-tea cozies for my friends, so they will never have a cup of coffee go cold again. Short, easy, not much yarn required. xx

  2. Good luck with the socks. Don't forget to tell your beloved how pleased you were with the gift he bought for you.

  3. I was never so happy as when I figured out that magic loop business, and magically knit TWO SOCKS AT THE SAME TIME, producing a finished pair! I happily went on to knit... no others.

Seriously, I don't know why, but I went right back to knitting socks toe up, but one at a time, on dpns. Not sure what's wrong with me. Maybe I'll get back to it? In the mean time, my socks must patiently wait for their mates to be completed.

I wish your socks a better fate.

  4. Two at a time? From the toe up? Sounds like voodoo.

  5. Please let us know what happens...and would you, in your wildest teenage dreams, have thought this was the wondrous life that awaited you? Purchasing "knitting 2 socks at a time from the toe up" from bookstores?

Life is a wonderful thing....it gives us what we never ever would've imagined for ourselves.

  7. And go you, for trying new techniques! I've never gotten very far with magic loop- I'm too attached to my straight needles.

  9. Did you also receive a huge bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream for mother's day? Using up all of your yarn? That's WAY more optimistic than I can muster these days... Glad to hear that Your Day went well.

An imposing countess in War and Peace knit two socks at a time -- one INSIDE the other. To casual observers she was just knitting one, and then she cast off and presto-change-o, pulled out its twin. It's some sort of double knitting that allows for NO mistakes, so it's not such a great method for those who like to knit drunk. Not that I'm saying you drink hard liquor when you're alone with your stash. I'm not actually saying that.
