Sweet Nothings

Well, yesterday was fun, wasn't it? Let's get back to trivial matters, however. That's what I do best. We just made the teens watch a DVD of Bob Newhart doing all his old comedy routines. I'm not sure whether they will ever forgive us, but I cannot get enough of that guy. The Driving Instructor, King Kong on the Empire State Building (as viewed by a very flustered night guard), President Lincoln's handler convincing him to "keep the beard, Abe; just keep the beard." I heart Bob Newhart. He's not bad-looking for - what? - over 70 years old? And if anyone can remember (or figure out) which season of The Bob Newhart Show had the moo-goo-gai-pan episode in it, please let me know. I want to show that to the kids, too.

See? Trivial...I warned you...

Time change coming right up! Gosh, isn't that a great idea? Trying to drag the kids out of bed an hour earlier than their bodies are used to, and in the dark? Who thought it was smart to get rid of the morning sunlight? I've been waiting all winter to have that sun streaming in my windows in the morning, and now it gets yanked away so someone can have a BBQ in the evening? In March? Last I checked, more than half of you were still buried in snow.

I don't get it. I just don't get it. I would be happy if we could just leave those clocks alone, all year-round. There was research done (in Indiana, which finally got with the clock-switching program) that proved that DST actually uses more energy, not less. Because (surprise!) people still need to get up for work and school in the morning, and no one likes to shower and get dressed in the dark. Duh.

Nothing like a time change to make me realize just how powerless I am...

It's my bedtime, folks (well, for 2 more nights, anyway...). If you're staying up, hop on over to Mrs. G's for some dead-on marriage advice...you'll be glad you did.

  1. I must disagree. I love me some DST! Can't wait. But the Mrs. G post? Genius.

  2. I agree. They should just pick a time and stick with it.
I finally got all my clocks re set after the power outage we had a week ago, and now I'll need to do it again.

  3. http://www.tv.com/the-bob-newhart-show/over-the-river-and-through-the-woods/episode/28457/summary.html its season 4 according to here.
Ugh, I hate the whole time change too. it would be best if we could turn the clocks back 3 hours each time, instead of forward and backward. That way at least 2x a year, moms could get extra sleep.

Im for it, anyone else with me?

  4. It is so great to live where there is no time change ever. I once read about an enterprising boy who made a killing twice a year changing the time display on all the electonics for other people.

Bob Newhart is SO FUNNY! How does he keep a straight face? I would love to see him in a skit with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman (Please tell me you know who these people are!)

  5. Season four. All I did was Google "moo goo gai pan episode" (in quotes). I heart Google.

  6. I have to disagree with you. I'd rather have evening hours. My kids are early risers anyway so this time of year I actually feel as though I get to sleep in. "Look, the clock says 7:00 instead of 6:00!"

  7. Bob Newhart is a comedic genius!! Love that guy, my kids (which are almost the exact same age as yours: 17, 13, 10, 8, 5, and 2)just don't get.

For instance, different show now, I had my oldest two watch that classic Thanksgiving episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, and they just went, eh. Oh well, what to do.

Back to Bob Newhart, did you ever see the PBS special on him? I can't remember what it was called, but it went through his whole life and is very interesting and has lots of comedy clips from his standup routines and shows. You might be able to find it if you go to PBS.org.

I agree with everyone on the time change deal - because like Chicago said so well "Does anybody really know what time it is?"

  8. I actually love when we set the clocks ahead! More daylight at the end of the day makes me a happy girl. And reminds me that spring IS on the way despite what the thermometer says.

  9. I'm with jenn, I like my light in the evening. And it's dark when I roll out of bed now anyway.

I love Bob Newhart, also Bill Cosby's old stand up is hysterical.

  10. I hate the time change!!!! ARGH! I finally get to run when it's light out - who needs light at the end of the darned day, anyway!? Now the kids stay up!

  11. Here's an idea.
When DST rolls around again let's move the clocks 1/2 hour, then leave it alone! Forever!

    Bob Newhart rules.

  12. No, not the time change thing again! Didn't I just set the clocks to fall back? Nothing like a twice a year ding to remind me how quickly time flys. The only redeeming factor is that I try to remember to change the batteries in my smoke alarm. Oh the joy of sleepy, grumpy kids in the morning.

  13. I adore Bob. His dry humor is so lovely.
We're so far north that it'll still be daylight with the switch for us. I forget how you Southerners live with less daylight.

  14. Daylight Savings time is a joke. I like the extra night hours, but the energy savings justification is a FARCE!

uhhh, Bob Newhart? Seriously? You gotta get out, hon.

    KEEP BELIEVING

  15. Why in the world must we suffer through this. Sigh. I just realized that we skip this hour and Saturday night I'm taking two nine-year olds to a play that starts at 8 pm. So the regular old bedtime will be late -- and this is a sleepover -- and now, spring forward. Basically, a No zzzz night. ..

  16. Time changes...I've found that it totally depends on what part of the time zone you are in. Moving from the eastern edge of a time zone to the western edge has totally changed my feelings on time changes. I used to hate the change in the fall, and only liked DST, but now they both represent sweet deliverance and relief.

  17. I thought they change the clocks so that kids don't have to get off the school bus or walk home from school in the dark.

I have no idea if this is true.

But it makes me less annoyed to think of sweet children walking home when it's still light out.

  18. I hate Daylight Savings Time. Idiotic. And I LOVE Bob Newhart. His comedy is just so gentle, I love it.

  19. I'm with YOU on this one. I H-A-T-E the whole "change the clock" thing. And I live in Indiana where we didn't have to do the stupid thing for YEARS and YEARS until our esteemed Governor pushed us into being like the rest of y'all.

Those girls that said they like the light at night. WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT????? It stayed light here in IN until 9:30 in the evening in the summer ANYWAY. I think that is plenty late enough.

Why do we BOTHER to have time zones???? Isn't THAT to adjust for the revolution of Earth on its axis????

    I HATE DST.

  20. Let me be a tad more clear - - -

I MEANT, Why do we bother with time zones if we're STILL going to do the whole DST hour change thing.

Obviously we DO need time zones or someone somewhere would have their entire daytime in the dark and their entire night in the light.

  21. I'm with you on the pointless time change but, like Jenn, I love me some extra daylight in the evening!
