Chocolate And Nuts And Flowers, Oh My!

Okay, especially for Mother's Day, I present to you one of the more pathetic Mother's Day gifts I've heard about, courtesy of Carpoolqueen:

[My husband] went golfing with the guys one Mother's Day weekend. Brought me a gift - a golf shirt...it was wrapped in the plastic bag from the pro shop. I do not play golf.

Doesn't reading that anecdote make the words "justifiable homicide" flit through your brain? Get 12 women on the jury, Carpoolqueen, and I guarantee that you wouldn't even have to serve jail time.

Fortunately for my husband, he does not play golf. He did himself proud with some potted flowers, delicious chocolate and nuts from Trader Joe's, and an honest-to-goodness grown-up umbrella. I believe he picked up that last present just so he wouldn't have to endure another rainstorm hearing me complain about the Hello, Kitty situation.

The only other thing I would like is a nap; but, seeing as someone had the dubious wisdom of scheduling Anna's orchestra concert on Mother's Day, I will not be getting that wish. I will, however, continue assiduously ignoring the dishes that are piling up in our sink. The magic dishes fairy is not showing up today.

  1. Happy Mother's Day to you too! Hope that Magic Dish Fairy shows up and he's wearing your husband's clothes.

Eek. WHO would schedule an orchestra concert for Mother's Day? Not a real mother, that's for sure, probably a male with a really sentimental view of mothering in general.

  6. So glad that I could make you all appreciate your husbands more this Mother's Day, for I am kind and giving that way.

I am happy to report that he has since seen the light.

  7. I think by sundown, the holiday is officially past; hence, the dishes in the sink at 8:30 pm. My husband is refusing to cook and bringing in barbecue. Yayyy!

  8. Well, I didn't get gifts but I DID get a nap! Between the two of us we have a perfect day!

  9. No nap...but had one yesterday...
got 30 min on the exercise bike in TOTAL SILENCE, with my prayer books...then another 20 min on the porch in the sunshine with some more spiritual reading and a hot cup of Earl Grey...
I could have done ANYTHING after that...
the best thing is we got to Mass on time...on a bright, warm sunny morning and then we went out for brunch at my favorite place...no lines, no waiting, just GREAT food!!!
    Woo Hoo!
Oh, yeah, the ants are dead or dying!!!

  10. I got a $$$$ gift certificate to a quilt shop. Who cares what else happened today. Although I am sipping a mimosa as I type this. And we're off to my favorite restaurant soon.

The golf shirt story is a classic. Definitely deserves the death penalty

  11. Golf shirt? How about 18 volt drill for birthday? It happened.

    Happy Mother's Day!

  12. Carpoolqueen deserves royal treatment for the rest of her life. Another terrible story I read this week in an online contest: a guy bought his wife, who was pregnant with their first child, a bathroom scale "so we can see how big you get."

    Stab stab stabby stab stab.

Happy Mother's Day--glad you had a good one.

  13. Don't try to get Anna to do the dishes. I asked for yard and housework for Mother's Day and boy was it fun. Not.

    Happy Mother's Day!

  14. That's so sad about the golf shirt. Was it her size or her husband's?
I'm glad you got chocolate. Chocolate covered nuts are a bonus!
DH took me to The Eagles concert last night, then let me sleep in late this morning.
    Perfect!

I'm glad to hear that Larry knows how to treat you right (well, except for the nap & dishes).
    I didn't get a nap, either.
And while I love a good orchestra concert, Seriously? Mother's Day is not a good day for it. That one has MAN written all over it!

Well, I enjoyed Mother's day vicariously through you, since my family let the day pass without so much as a peep. That's right, no cards, letters, phone calls, flowers, candy or dinner out. Not even a golf shirt in the wrong size! I bought myself a pint of Ben and Jerry's as a token of my esteem. I didn't share.

Happy to hear Larry gets it. A golf shirt? Sheesh. I'm thinking he deserves a slow, painful death.

  21. OK, the golf shirt may be the lamest MD gift I've ever heard of. One year I got a large TV. I'm sure you know who really wanted the TV.

  22. A golf shirt? That is one sad Mother's Day.

  23. I read about the golf shirt somewhere in my blogging travels.

And I actually scheduled a voice recital on Fathers Day last year, but they get waited on enough---so I didn't really feel guilty about it.
