Pass The Popcorn

Last night I discovered that Larry and I had neglected an important part of our oldest child's education.

"Look what I got from the library," I said, waving a DVD at Theo and Larry. "A Few Good Men - it has Jack Nicholson in it!"

"Who's Jack Nicholson?" asked my firstborn.

Look, I never claimed homeschooling is perfect, all right?

In an effort to fill in the gaps for Theo, we are embarking on a Jack Nicholson retrospective this summer. First on my list is Batman (and yes, I did see that one - it came out before I started having kids). Does anyone have any more suggestions? Remember, it has to be something I wouldn't be embarrassed watching with my 18-year-old son - I don't mind profanity; but scenes of graphic, uh, romance are out.

Still enjoying my IPod Touch and adding apps daily - who knew a grocery list could be such fun?

I think my family & yours probably need to get together for movie nights. We have likely neglected many of the same things.

  2. In no particular order,

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    The Shining
    Chinatown
    Easy Rider

  3. I know the answer to this one! One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest! (I prefer the book, but this is a must for Jack Nicholson intro class.) I am also partial to The Witches of Eastwick and Terms of Endearment, but there's some - ahem - romance there. And please, please, please do not watch Shining! The worst adaptation ever, IMO.

  4. OH Hoffa is great but every other word is the F word. I can't remember if there is nudity or not. Don't forget As Good As It Gets.
What about One Flew Over The CooKoo's Nest? I can't remember about the nudity though.

  5. Will you be showing him The Shining?I accidentally watched that movie once in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep so I was surfing through the channels......

A must have iPod app would be "Ask the Hoff" You ask an animated David Hasslehoff head yes or no questions, and he gives you an answer. We only have the free version of the app, so it only includes about 6 different answers, however, if you're willing to fork out a dollar for the full app, I hear that there are many more answers.
I can't tell you how much guidance David Hasselhoff gives us on any given day......

He was charming in As Good As It Gets--plus the screenplay for that film is brilliantly written--dialogue and character development is ROCK SOLID.

Heartburn with Meryl Streep. He sings in it, and it's pretty funny. The Bucket List is okay. Skip The Shining. Not safe for adult viewing. Your kid on the other hand would probably do just fine with it!

    Mars Attacks!

It's a funny film and there is no romance in it (as far as I remember) :-)

  15. You should add angry birds, game, on your ipod. The free version is fun and addictive.

  16. Cuckoos nest of course. Shining if you think he can handle it. Probably he can. Stuff is rarely as scary to a younger generation.

Good as it gets is cute. Umm, Terms of Endearment is a good one. There is romance but it's relatively chaste.

My favorite 3 are cuckoo's nest, the shining, and witches of eastwick. That one has references to less chaste "romance" but I don't remember it being graphic. And it is really good. I might put it second.

  17. I loved Heartburn! Though suspect not the movie for a teenage boy...

  18. No one suggested Bucket List? Not a classic per se but certainly has a few aspects every 18 yo needs a dose of anyway.

  19. The one where he works with that big nosed girl..... HMMMMM.... AS GOOD AS IT GETS!!!!! I love that movie.

  20. OMG, you homeschooled him (them)? Woman, you are automatically getting my nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. In order to homeschool mine I would need 2 straightjackets for them, and a valium cocktail for me. My suggestions are: Full Metal Jacket, Lord of the Flies, and Casablanca

  21. Here are some suggestions from Prince Charming:

    The Bucket List
    Mars Attacks!
    The Witches of Eastwick
Wolf - Nicholson and Pfeiffer sleep together; no nudity, just one brief underwear shot for Pfeifffer.

  22. As Good As It Gets is a good one. Witches of Eastwick is pretty silly, but fun. Prizzi's Honor was pretty good too.

  23. The cuckoo's nest, the shining, As Good As It Gets, Terms of endearment.

I haven't seen A Few Good Men. I keep meaning to, but then it just looks boring.
