A Cry For Help

Seems like just yesterday that I wrote this post about baking my husband's birthday cake...and it seems like just the day before yesterday that I wrote the instructions for that same cake here.  I swear, my life is on fast forward and it is time once again to indulge in that annual extravaganza known in these parts as baking the cake that I am not even sure my husband likes.

But I still don't have a present for him.  Last year we bought him an IPod Touch with my BlogHer earnings, and it is sort of a tough act to follow (unlike the spiffy 4.1-gallon paper shredder we had bought him the previous year).  I am plumb out of ideas, folks.  Reasonably priced suggestions, anyone?

  1. When my husband was 50, I took him to an "adult playground" - so he could play with tanks, armoured cars, guns, archery and other big boy stuff. When he was 60, I got him a trip in a hot-air balloon. I went along to both, with my camera, just because it looked like fun. But in between those special birthdays, I had no ideas at all. Good luck!

  2. Power tools are often good. Does he have a powered screwdriver (or a spare drill)? I know when we're doing woodwork, we wind up using the drill for pilot holes, and it's a pain to switch back and forth from a drill bit to a screwdriver bit. Getting the power screwdriver was a big time-saver, and a lot faster than a hand screwdriver. If he doesn't already have screwdriver bits for the drill, be sure to get them too. One Phillips head and on flat head bit to start.

  3. You knew I'd have a suggestion, didn't you? Another handy tool that not everyone has (and next on my to buy list) is a staple gun.

  4. Robin has a good idea. I know this because my husband suggested that I get him a really powerful staple gun. Instead, I decided that his 50th birthday should be a "midlife crisis" birthday, so he received his other desired gift: a longboard (expensive long skateboard). He loves it!

  5. I say wine and dine him. Get rid of the kids and have a date night.
    Make it all about him.
Or send him off camping with just the kids, make it all about daddy day.
Otherwise, I think he needs a new coffee or beer mug, we can hook you up.

  6. Your husband gets presents for his birthday?
We got married on hubby's 30th birthday, so he has no excuse to forget our anniversary. I really should buy him the bits he needs for the router I got him for Father's day 3 years ago?

  7. My husband's 40th was yesterday. We got him nothing. (The youngest gave him half a snickers and then I ate it.) I told him, though, that he gets to pick out an MP3 player (or something) because he wants to download books in Spanish. We'll see what he decides.

  9. Wait... you got paid for blogging?! I get nothing but a really messy house for blogging.

  10. My husband and I don't exchange gifts for birthdays, Christmas or our anniversary. We just get each other a nice card and call it good. So I've got nothing for you. Sorry!

  11. Gifts for husbands? Wow... I've been slacking all these years. I blame that on the fact that he never wants anything and doesn't need anything. So on the "big" birthdays I give him memories -- framed photos of him as a child or of his beloved grandparents, a box full of photos and items (ticket stubs, maps, etc.) from years past, etc. He likes that stuff, then shoves it in a box under the bed. I could probably take it out years later and give it to him again without him knowing.

I once bought my husband a one day fishing trip with a guide. He loved it. What about a good pocket knife? My husband loves knives! He also loves flashlights. Can't believe how many nice knives and amazing flashlights there are out there, some can be quite expensive but you guys camp so I bet he would have use for either of these.
