The Latest From The Lollipop Guild

Feeling good about these
I've been to 3 yarn shops in the past 2 days.  Oh, and Michael's yesterday evening.  I guess maybe it's a good thing that Auntie Kate is leaving tomorrow morning - things have gotten a bit out of hand around here.

On the plus side, I've knit two sets of fingerless mitts for Christmas presents.  Of course, that accomplishment only makes me feel as though I've earned some more yarn.

I typed "yearn" up there at first.  I yearn for yarn.

I also spent time today shortening my jeans so that I don't lose the nice jean hem.  Can anyone explain to me why petite jeans come with 29-inch inseams?  I wear 2-inch-high clogs, and I still have to cuff up my pants.

I have high hopes for these, too.
Anywhoo, I saw this neat hemming method on Pinterest and decided to try it.  It works!  Sort of.  I mean , the idea works, but I had to fiddle with the details.  I tried it out on my old jeans with the holes in them, and really, it looks fantastic.  If you aren't short, you cannot appreciate the luxury of being able to dress in clothes that don't look like oversize hand-me-downs.  And now that Anna at An Inch of Gray has alerted me to the existence of jeans that might just fit, I might even be able to abandon my latest plan of buying some trendy maternity jeans at Target to accommodate my post-menopausal belly

I can't believe how desperate I am feeling about this wardrobe problem.  Really, I don't ask much, clothing-wise - just a pair of jeans that look stylish and that also button around my waist without gouging my stomach.  I'm not obese, people (although, if I keep eating this Halloween candy the way I have been the past few days, I will be); I'm just the wrong shape, apparently.

A POX on clothing manufacturers, that's all I'm trying to say.

  1. Took me ages to find jeans that fit properly, but LLBean has a lot of options for different figures and one of theirs turned out to be perfect. I get both sides of the problem- my husband has short legs, so I hem his pants. And I'm long-legged - which is actually harder- I have to hold out for tall pants (that *also* fit through the waist and hips), or else pretend they were supposed to be cropped pants. Or wear boots, which I tend to do when the weather is cold- having pants that are too short is okay if the ankles are covered.

  2. I continually chide my husband for buying jeans too long when he doesn't have to. I might try this the next time. It looks less taxing for my poor old sewing machine.

  3. I bought a few pairs of jeans from Macy's this summer and was so surprised to find that they carried a petite/short option--they are just right for me. (5'1" and not real skinny.) First time ever, I haven't had to hem new jeans. I bought a couple of different brands--Style & Co and something else--can't remember.

  4. My solution to the jeans problem has been that I wear a singlet--everything fits so much better and it's not uncomfortable. Mad Women looked like that in the day because of foundation garments. Word.

Also--I am very lucky in the length department. Petite for flats, regular for heels.

  5. My middle daughter suffers from Raynaud's Syndrome, so I am all about gifting fingerless gloves. Also, going to look up patterns and try my hand at crocheting fingerless gloves (no pun intended, I swear!) thanks for the inspiration :)

  6. I'm hearing all that about the way clothes are made. It's so frustrating when designers work under the assumption that we're all 5'8"--all leg, no hip/thigh/tummy. Don't know ANYONE who has that body aside from teenaged boys.

  7. I saw that post about those jeans, too, and boy do they look comfy. I may just give in completely to comfy.

  8. I've tried that jean-hemming method from Pinterest. I believe it is called an "LA hem" and I've also heard it called a Paris hem. My results are pretty good, but if you are really fussy, it might be better to have a professional do it.

    1. I'm pretty happy with my results. Now I just have to work up the nerve to try it on a more expensive pair of jeans. Why in the world do they market a 30-inch hem for petites?!

  9. At 5'10", I pretend a lot of pants are really meant to be cropped pants or ankle-length.
