Drill, Baby, Drill

Quickly, before I head out to Knit Night...

I had my (newly expensive) dental appointment today. Apparently it is possible to get a cavity in the root of your tooth beneath a crown. Who knew? And when that happens, the dentist has to break the old (also expensive, but not as expensive as now) crown, fix the tooth, and then make you a brand spanking new crown.

Did I mention expensive? Oh, okay then.

Terrible (& gratuitous) pic of my current project
Only, it didn't happen. Oh, it started to happen. I spent an hour and a half in the dentist's office and received three (count them, THREE) different shots of Novocaine. I couldn't feel my tongue or my throat by the end of it.

I could, however, feel that darn drill. Yup. Seems I have an auxiliary nerve on that side of my mouth that is hard to hit with the Novocaine. In fact, we had the same problem 10 years ago when he was working in that spot. I should have reminded him, I guess.

So we're trying again in 3 weeks. I can only assume that poor guy is going to give me 16 shots of Novocaine as soon as I walk in there and I won't be able to feel my face for 2 days. But I don't care - I just want to get this over with. I HATE DENTAL WORK.

Okay, I feel better now that I've whined about it. Anyone want to share their nightmare dental stories?

  1. Twice I had to have dental surgery where I had to keep my mouth open for 3 or more hours. I was sick for a week afterwards both times. Dental work is miserable! I"m with ya!

  2. I've had one cavity in my life, and a couple months ago they had to take it out and refill it---just a refresher filling. I thought I'd die, it hurt so bad. Or the NOISE hurt so bad. I had at least three different stages of injections, too. Next time, I might ask for gas....except that might cost a pretty penny. Anyway, now my tooth is sensitive---and before I never noticed it. So much for that.

  3. My poor husband has had at least 5 root canals. He's at the point where he schedules it first thing and then goes to work. The dentist office always calls to see how's he's doing and is surprised he's not there. Me? I take the rest of the day off and feel sorry for myself. I really like our dentist but man, dental work sucks.

  4. My condolences on the impending dental work! Don't get me started. Let's just say I also cringe just thinking about it and I really do have a nice and gentle dentist. I have eight+ crowns (in my mouth) and won't have work without novocaine, gas and headphones on that I can turn up as the drilling starts to try and block it out! Wishing you luck!

  5. I was cringing just reading this. I go to the dentist every six months for a cleaning, and I dread it every single time. If I ever have to go through what you did ... they'd have to anesthetize me before I got there.

  6. I did the first part of this exact thing on Monday. I go back in two weeks to get the new crown. My mouth is achy. I, too, loathe dental work.

  7. Oh no! That's the worst! Last May 2 hours before our oldest graduated from high school, our 10 year old was practicing pitching to Coach. The ball took a bad bounce and knocked out Coach's front teeth and bridge from a childhood injury. Curly's 1st communion was the next day and we left for Glacier later in the week. He has scabs all over his mouth in all of the pictures. It was an ordeal to repair - cost around $11,500 after insurance. Good luck!

  8. Hmm I wonder if that's what I had too. When I had my root canal I swear I got 10 shots of Novocain. I was finally like just go quick so they could get me the hell out of there.

Also sadly there is no closet picture here.
