Love Story

I'm in love.

Larry and I went to BestBuy this morning on our date (yes, I know - the romance is just overwhelming): he needed to check out prices on computers (don't ask) and I was ogling flattop stoves, because last week I decided that my life is too short to spend cleaning burner drip pans.

On my way back to the computer area, I saw it. My refrigerator. The one I'm destined for. The one that will solve all my cold storage problems.

Now, I'm not some young slip of a housewife, unaware of the ways of the world and easily charmed by anything with a plug and a frostfree interior. Over the years I have become inured to the charms of shiny new appliances, for I have learned the truth: give them a month in my house, and they look as though they are ready for the dump. But still...one look inside this beauty, at its capacious door storage, its unsullied crispers, its pull-out bottom freezer...and I was smitten.

Unfortunately, one glance at its price tag destroyed our budding relationship (and it didn't help that Larry laughed at my infatuation). This love, apparently, was doomed to be unrequited.

  1. I too fell for that young stud and he was way out of my league. I had a friend who found one with a dent and it was cheap. Go to Lowes also and ask if they have any scratch and dent models. Best Buy is pretty high on appliances.

  2. I can't tell you how many times in my life that a price tag has destroyed a budding relationship with a kitchen appliance. Or granite countertop. Or living room furniture..........

  3. You hussy, you! That's MY refrigerator! Keep your hands off, I saw him first!

Too bad my husband had the same reaction to the price tag that yours did. AND he claims that it's too big for our kitchen anyway. Believe me, I'd sacrifice my Tupperware cupboard for this baby any day!

  4. If you do get to get a flat top stove, be sure to get one that is not almond, white, or light colored on the surface. Now, I will tell you I do clean my glasstop stove often enough but there are sometimes when some of that crud just will not come off without several minutes of elbow grease and/or a razor blade. No, I'm not joking. So unless you want to look at the stuff, you will want a color that can "hide" it if you choose not to totally clean it after every single use. Otherwise, you will be wishing you had your drip pans again because a glasstop stove is way harder to clean than any drip pan.

  5. I'm with you--that is one HOT fridge!

  6. My friend JoAnn said her flat top stove was recently destroyed by a cat knocking something heavy onto the flat burner surface thing. That ruined my hopes of a flat top stove solving my life, because I drop heavy stuff all the time. JoAnn said it cost her $400+ to get it fixed.

  7. But just think of how it will stimulate the nation's economy. You OWE it to the rest of us to buy your refrigerator! Larry's patriotic; I think he'll understand his duty!

  8. i completely understand what you're going through. i feel that same way about washers and driers :)

  9. It's just not fair that those things that we NEED are so dang expensive!

  10. Have it. It's okay but not quite as spacious as it proclaims. We are two who cook a lot and have lots of condiments plus two kinds of milk, okay maybe a few wine bottles. We still have a mini fridge in the garage. Granted, we don't have a clean out every Wednesday. Like I said it's good. It's not heaven.

  11. I hear the french doors are kind of a pain. Two steps to open the doors when one makes more sense. But something about two doors just screams elegant, I guess. And who doesn't want a gigantic elegant appliance?

  12. I hope some day you are united with this great love.

  13. Check out stores that are "outlet" types. Sears outlet is one of them. I got my front load washer and dryer set 2 years ago for under a grand, when you couldn't get a front load washer for much less than that. I too long for a new fridge. However, I like a top freezer model, but the largest on the market is smaller than my growing family needs. I'd have to get a side by side or bottom freezer model. Why can't the world just work with me anymore?

Oh, and I have a smooth top range. Not bad, but drip pans are cheap - $15 a set at the wally.

  14. I could make you LOVE your kitchen if I showed you my nasty countertops...they look like the countertops you might find in a janitor's utility kitchen.
    Blech.
And, the shiny faux stainless refrigerator I loved that is sitting in my kitchen is so smudgy that you would think I had a bazillion kids.
    Whine over.
    Cute post.

  15. My mouth may have been hanging open looking at that fridge. Our hand-me-down fridge is driving me nuts lately. But I have to look at the fridge adverts and remind myself of what it would look like with 4 half used jars of mustard, 3 empty jam jars, butter with no lid because one of the kids licked it and got it all goobery, various squeeze bottles of mayo and other sauces, tupperware containers filled with leftovers I have forgotten about and various sizes of empty water bottles scattered amongst the beautiful, spotless, shiny new shelves. I think the insides of my fridge suit the hand-me-down outside.

  16. The one I looked at recently was $2500+. No way is heck hubby would buy one. The side be side we bought 7 years ago is a piece of junk. Every drawer has cracked along the edges, the built in tracks for them in the fridge are broken and the door lining cracked so the bottom shelf will not stay on. Hubby and I are considering a commercial metal fridge when this one dies. I can deal with a separate freezer and making my own ice cubes.

  17. I went so far as to measure for that particular model. Alas, too tall. But after reading some of the other comments perhaps just as well....

  18. My Mom has that fridge. I give it a little hug everytime I am over at her house. I love it, but it is not within our reach. So, I just pretend it is mine when I am at her house.

  19. I quite agree that it isn't heaven, but it is pretty dang close. I love ours but the stainless steel is a booger to keep clean and every little dink shows up 100 times worse. Ya just have to work it out: hubby gets a pretty, wifey gets a pretty:)

  20. I'd be in love, too! Even though it wouldn't fit in my kitchen... the previous owners did a lovely remodel job but the space for the fridge is so tight and the fridge is so small it can barely hold a Costco-sized take-n-bake pizza IF I can get the door to open wide enough.

Your date sounds exactly like many of our dates. Perhaps it is the sign of a long, happy marriage?

  21. Hubby and I used to love to grocery shop together :)
Now that is my special "time to myself"...sometimes.

  23. Sometimes I feel pathetic for how strong my desire is for shiny and efficient appliances.

  24. My hubby fell in love with a fancy schmancy fridge while we were remodeling; nothing wrong with the old one that a new gasket wouldn't fix. I had things I wanted done he said no to, too expensive; that fridge was fifty times the cost of the $20 bathroom door I wanted gone. There was some unhappiness over that.

But: the contractor had put the kitchen cabinets up the day before he went to put in the fridge, and that fridge was to the architect's specs. It didn't fit. The contractor had put things together wrong, and he had to take the cabinets back off the wall and redo. Had we gone back to him even a month later, he would just have laughed us off and told us it was our problem.

I gotta say, though: I still wanted a new bathroom door.

  25. Hubby and I go to Rona (Canadian Home Depot) on our dates. The way we figure it, for the price of a fancy meal out...we can get enough drywall to finish the basement or upgrade the bathroom fixtures.

Such glamorous lives we lead. :)

  26. I want one of those fridgin' fridges so fridgin' bad! I fridgin' HATE my fridge!

  27. We have a French door fridge. I gotta say, it's the bomb. You don't have to open both doors to get into it, and you if you do have both open, it doesn't matter which door you close first, so it's easy and convenient. We got it when we redid our kitchen. The kitchen remodel wasn't a vanity project – it was an absolute necessity as we had NO counter space (who builds a kitchen without counters?) and a oven so small I think it was actually an Easy Bake oven. We got a 20% discount for buying more than three appliances at a time, then there was a rebate situation, and well, I basically promised my husband I'd never ask for anything ever again, like a child begging for a puppy. I know what I'm supposed to say is, "They're pricey, and they're not all that," but I'm pretty happy with it.

When my grandmother first saw it, she gasped and said, "You have EVERYTHING!" It's funny how women, no matter their age, all have kitchen appliance lust.

  28. It is quite lovely, but I have to say that the shiny stainless steel has never held appeal to me because I've seen what dirt sticks to it at my friend's place. She is a clean freak, so she is constantly scrubbing it. It would drive me batty! lol

When our fridge died a few years ago, we decided to opt for an all-fridge. It was tough to find in our small town, because it was either Danby or Sears brand. We bought the Sears one, and I have to say I barely ever run out of room in my fridge, even with 7 kids' worth of stuff. I think it cost us about 800$ 4-5 years ago. An all-fridge is very inexpensive, and much more spacey than anything I've ever had. And if you already have a deep freezer in the basement, why not? IT helps burn the ice-cream calories to walk up and down the stairs to treat yourself. ;)

  29. I got to look in someones fridge that looks like that and they are a beauty! Hold on to the dream.

  30. I dream of that fridge as well. It just looks like it would stay cleaner than my very old side by side.
