Cocktails and Witchcraft

I just saw a promo photo for Charlie Wilson's War and all I can say is, what happened to Tom Hanks? Does he really look that way now, or is it just make-up? Granted, I'm a bit behind on movies and my reference point for Tom is about 20 years ago (I'm thinking Volunteers or Big); but still.....

This evening Larry and I actually got to act the way I thought all grown-ups acted, back when I was a kid - we went out to a cocktail party. I got dressed up and everything. There were lots of other grown-ups there, so I did my best to sound intelligent and talk about something other than housework or laundry; but once I ended up in a room with a bunch of other home school moms, our conversation veered to comparing math programs and chemistry textbooks more quickly than you can say "curricula obsession." It's an occupational hazard.

We also spent a disproportionate amount of time talking about Santa. Don't ask me why. I got bored at that point and decided to hang out by the dessert table.

We left the kids watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It was Susie's first time, but apparently she wasn't traumatized by the Abominable Snow Monster. When I was a kid, I was terrified of that thing. I was very impressionable, I guess. Or stupid.

Theo had a brush with the occult today at work. A woman came up to the register with a stack of books, all bearing titles such as Wicca and Witchcraft for Dummies and Mind Control: The Ancient Art of Psychological Warfare and Necromancy Made Easy. When Theo inquired after the nature of her reading material, she claimed that her husband never listens to her and she was going to fix that. Because the books were cheaper than a divorce.

Hell indeed hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Well, it is almost midnight. God rest ye, merry gentlemen and ladies all!

  1. My son was traumatized by the Abominable (CANNOT spell this word) Snow Man. He covers his face with a pillow and peers out from behind it when we watch Rudolph.

Glad you got to go to a cocktail party. How fun! God rest ye' tight back at ya'

  2. How lame is it that a cocktail party where homeschooling curricula is discussed sounds tres exciting to me. Truly, it does. Yes, I know, I'm sad.

Glad you and Larry got a night out.

  3. I saw Charlie Wilson's War last night, and I have to say, you are right. Though his body is still good, how did they make his face look fat? I was just wondering. Good movie, though. I must say, they managed to age Julia Roberts well beyond my vision of her...she pulled it off, too well. Maybe I am getting old.

  4. mrs. g. - I think it's a trait all hs'ers share, that ability to have fun while discussing different Latin programs or such. In my mind, it beats listening to parents discuss ad nauseum which colleges their kids are applying to and when and exactly what scores they got on which college entrance tests. No one seems to remember that getting accepted to a certain college really doesn't set you up for life.

Pet peeve of mine, I guess.

  5. deb - Pretty Woman was almost 20 years ago. I don't think they had to age her much. Scary, huh?

  7. Happy Holidays!

My son was traumatized that Frosty the Snowman melted, even though Santa reincarnated him. I sat right next to him and watched him carefully during the scene, but the tears didn't come until the end. Flat-out sobbing. My dear, sensitive boy. For Christmas he's getting the multi-pack DVD of the classics from our childhood. I'll watch him carefully during Rudolph.

  8. mary alice - The thing is, I never would have made that incident up - I wouldn't have thought it believable enough to be funny. I kept asking Theo, "Are you sure she said that?" "Which books were in the pile?" We had fun looking them up on Amazon. There was another one we couldn't find; the title was something like "10 Fast and Effective Curses for Everyday."

  9. amy - Oh, yeah, I never believed that nonsense of him coming back. I watched him melt that slow, horrifying death and was devastated that no one saved him in time.

  11. You went out - woo-hoo! Sorry about the curricula discussion, although I'd have been right in there. Sadly. Hope the desserts were more interesting.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

  12. I know what you mean about Tom. Back when he was on "Bosom Buddies" (and boy, am I aging myself) I used to think he was kind of cute. It is possible that I also look a tad different.

  13. Oh my gosh, I was terrified of the snow monster. Eeeeeeeek. I won't let my kids watch Rudolph yet. They don't need that kind of trauma.

  14. That Abominable Snowman is scary.
I think that the makeup job in Charlie Wilson's war probably made them both look more their age :) What an interesting job Theo has, that was a crack up!
Since I'm not at a cocktail party, what math program do you use?

Hey, this was my party! I'm famous! Did you try the chocolate bourbon cake?

I guess this shows that you can take the homeschooler out of the home, but you can't take the school out of the homeschooler. Or something like that.
